Going down a grade is bad but shearing is not

But we've covered, over, and over, and over again that eh original Mobil 1 5W20 was created using zero in the way of VMs, and before the days when HTHS was included in J300...it's HTHS was likely 2.9 (like Redline's offerings, built the same way)...and it was running against 10W40s, which back in the day were a dog of an oil, and when J300 FINALLY included HTHS minimums, they were put at 2.9 also (and some of them didn't even make THAT, in having to make it the minimum).

To infer that a modern ILSAC 5W20 (2.6HTHS) could replace a modern 10W40 (3.5HTHS) using 40 year old marketting as evidence is a bit of a long bow to draw (I get slammed is an SAE paper that I present here is older than 10 years).

So did I, trying to be an early adopter and maybe scratching a couple lb-ft of torque. 81 Chevy s-20 2.8L manual trans, 10w30 spec IIRC. Engine made lots of noise and ran "off" so I dumped it. Same thing happened when I bought some "vAlv-o-line" from a dollar store and it pored out and smelled like kerosene. Dumped that too.

My 2001 ford bullitt modular loved 5w20 and ran well on it. Had an OC at a Lincoln dealer and they put 5w30 in and the engine felt like it had mud in it.

I think Ford has low HTHS oils figured out with Honda a distant second and Subaru sill struggling.
 
And nary a Porsche in sight

why does engine rattle and make a knocking sound when lower grade oil is put in if your saying thinner oil is fine to use?

You should know by now that people make up a lot of things on Internet boards, including things that aren't even mentioned in a thread.
 
Here's a post I made in another thread. The given examples just happened to be on the front page. I would note that I don't necessecarily consider used oil analysis to be the end-all-be-all:

Did you see the flashpoint in that 2.7L Ford? No way that's less than 0.5% fuel dilution. Other than that it's amistery to me what dart engine has to do with a Ford.

I didn't know this thread was about engines...

And I included a disclaimer regarding used oil analysis (IMHO). I suspect that more than a few are sloppy work with TBN's and the like being all over the map, again, IMHO and depends on the company...

Once upon a time I ignored engine noise, and a few minutes later 2 rods went through the side of the block cresting a hill on Route 495 S in Westford.
