GM..would you trust one to run how many miles?

I'd trust a GM car to 250k.

Especially a 3800.

If your going to do that many miles then you will want to consider the extended warranty. One other thing to note, GM has discountinued these so get it while you can. One more thing on top of it all, these are not assembled by GM, it is contracted out to another company.

I haven't seen anything about them discontinuing the HHR..in fact I saw that they are coming out with a SS version for 2008. Where are you getting this information? I know it is built in Mexico but how do you know that GM is not building these cars and how is it different than any other maker who has cars built in Mexico?

I'd still be driving my Beretta today if it hadn't been destroyed by an 18-year old kid with a big truck almost 3 years ago. The MPFI version of the 60-degree V6 was practically bulletproof. Two starters, two alternators, two waterpumps, one heater core, one fuel pump, one EGR valve (the expensive electronic kind).... I swapped the bigger 92+ calipers and rotors (and steering knuckles too) onto it and it improved the brakes noticeably.

I'll admit I had a lot of rust issues but I think that may be due to getting the car repainted (I had the notorious peeling paint issues). I've never seen another Beretta that had rust like mine.

My company offers only GM vehicles as company cars
True we are a supplier but Chrysler is a larger buyer than GM
I also only own Dodge brand as personal vehicles for last 10 years.

I drive a 2007 Impala with over 25,000 miles we service every 5k miles at Jiffy lube or Firestone. I have had zero issues with this vehicle in 4 months.

Prior I drove an 04 Impala with over 150k on it and I did not receive until 65k on it (person who had before had never changed tranny fluid either) after 15 months and 85k miles the only issue I did have was when the dealer installed a new air filter and it was sucked into air box which caused a false tranny code / shift issue.

My gut feeling is that day in and day out they are all the same, I buy on price and only shop big 3 and then service the snot out of it...

yep..looked browish orange

changed it every 25k after that with no mechanical issues

again I am talking Jiffy Lube here, so whatever they have in the tank is what we get..

At least your employer allows you to change it.

150k on the original transmission filter!

So much for that myth of "flush your transmission without changing the filter and it'll die."

My 07 is headed for the same treatment....only the fleet managers want to extend oil to 5k and service tranny every 50k (I will still do 25-30k and bill em later). Fleet managers decide no synthetic and extended tranny service 50k+, I can agree with motor oil (even if it is bulk) but tranny needs service more often with lots of highway mileage with an average of 67 mph on 25k already..

Dexron-VI has been tested for 200k miles of service in the new 6-speed Automatics, even with the reduced sump capacity. 50k should be fine in your 4T65E.

Where did you get this bogus information?

The HHR will be going until at least 2010, if not longer.

As Goose mentioned they are coming out with the SS model in 2008 and the HHR Panel will be available in the next few months.

The HHRs are assembled at GMs Ramos Arizpe Complex in Mexico, they are not contracted out.

Hi

My Olds has 246,000 miles on it. Even the 4t60e is original to the car as is the tie rods, ball joints and rack.

From a co-worker's Camry recently traded in, I doubt that collection of parts will make it. Same roads..newer car..less miles..and yet it was time to trade.

What did the resident genius replace it with..another mechanized marvel.

I think I crossed model numbers. I was thinking of the GM vehicle that looks like a pickup truck with a bed that looks like a large trunk. If the HHR is the GM knock-off of the PT Cruiser then disregard what I wrote earlier, I was thinking of that ugly pickup truck thing when I wrote it and that is what the information I posted pertained to.

My gf bought a 1999 Cavalier last summer with over 100k on it, the only things wrong with it were tires and a broken motor mount. Six months and 8,000 miles later, nothing at all has gone wrong with the car. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about either the Corolla or the Accord that I've owned in the same span of time. The Toyota's engine was knocking terribly and sounded like it was about to explode by 80k, and the Honda just blew its radiator thanks to someone's bright idea to build the top half out of plastic and a failed thermostat.

Yes it is the SSR....

I'm convinced that buying any car is a crapshoot....chances are with some brands that your luck will tend to run better but there are lemons and bad apples in every one of them.

Hoping there will be some extra rebates as we get closer to the summer...if I'm not mistaken, doesn't GM typically heavily discount their vehicles the close we get to mid year?

I think that all of the manufacturers are in trouble, I see a lot of discounts and them being a lot more easy to work with. I recently bought my 06 at the end of the month and got &10k off before I even tried and/or arrived at dealer! At the dealer it amounted to $12.5k and exactly what I wanted for my 03 Dodge. I got a similar deal the Ford & GM dealer but chose the Dodge for the Mega cab..

"If you ain't scared time to buy is now"

I own a tiny GM econocar. It is my goal to get it to 400,000 miles. Right now my car is at 76,000 miles and I haven't had to replace anything major. It drives like new and the engine is still providing crazy good UOAs. My car is a 2004 Pontiac Sunfire - 5 spd manual. I change oil every 4k miles. My tranny I change every 30k miles (synthetic). I drive 220 miles/day to and from work averaging 70mph - little if any traffic. Won't have job for long - so 400,000 mile dream probably won't happen.

Average 35-40 mpg on my work trips depending on wind and how fast I go.

As for replacing stuff - all I've had to do:
The front end suspension does rattle and creak - had warranty replace that at 30,000 miles. They said it was a loose something and all they could do was replace it. The creaking returned at 60,000 miles but it is barely noticeable and only happens when you are turning and hit bumpy/rough road (rare in the city).

Well they extended the bonus cash until the end of the month...with rebates and GM $$ and military discount I've been quoted 15700 which is a really good price on a car that has a 19K MSRP.

Now just to to make a decision

Folks, he is talking about the whole car falling apart, not the engine.

The engine might last, but a GM front-wheel drive car is gonna be either put back together or completely falling apart at 250K miles.

Blinker switches, headliners, HVAC fans, alternators, radiators, wheel bearings, struts, the whole front end, seat positioners, electric window motors, vacuum leaks, ABS sensors, fuel pumps, etc.

Been there, done that, before 100k miles.
