Lets talk about them learning English first and pass a law making English the official language of the USA before these immigrants (legal and otherwise) overrun us and mandate theirs.
I am sick to death of catering to these people and pressing 1 for English.

Whatever happened to states rights? we don't need an official language for the country, just leave it up to the states. What if Puerto Rico ever becomes a state, they have the right to preserve their traditions, what about Hawaii? Louisiana and French? How about less laws and government rules instead of more?

Of course the US needs an official language. These people must assimilate like the Italians, Poles, Germans, Dutch and all the other immigrants did.
They must learn English and we must stop catering to them by lowering standards and graduating almost illiterate high school students.

Excellent, congrats! So glad to hear it. Do you intend to specialize in one specific population? My wife does peds with developmental issues.

Right - we can't have something like a Little Italy or Chinatown for these latest immigrants!

This is Murika - we took it from the Natives and Spanish fair and square! Now speaka da English or get out!

Exactly. Dont understand how really only one linguistic group gets this special treatment. While small groups retain original language in specific areas (e.g. the chinatown areas of specific cities), the wholesale destruction of our customs and de facto language is really sad.

Trav, Did anyone swoon over making everything you would ever need to see here in the USA printed in German? Oh wait, you probably had to learn English even before coming here. Heaven forbid anyone make everything bilingual English and German (at least at one point in time there were more German ethnics than any other group here in the USA).

If i didn't speak, read and write English i would be screwed and have a pretty lonely life.
I travel quite a bit but try to learn as much as i can to at least get what i need in the country i am going to.

Finnish was a real bugger but i got by, i didn't insult them by speaking in English first even though i knew many Fins speak it, instead i tried to speak their language albeit pitifully.
That got me a whole lot further and made some good long time friends.

LOL, I think kids going to HS nowadays ought to be mandated to learn ENGLISH, and some basic math and science for crying out loud, they seem to be really weak in these areas.

They can learn Spanish on their own time. German is the traditional second language of study in these parts. At least it used to be.

Wait a minute guys, when did I ever say English is not mandatory? Just saying Spanish is the most useful language now if you ever want to manage people in the US and that makes it near mandatory if you want to make good salary the honest way. (not inheriting from papa)

Other mandatory courses in High School:
Algebra
Physics
Chemistry
Economy (IMO this should be a high school course instead of in College)

We are graduating too many that couldn't do anything more than spelling their name these days. I still don't understand why would there be "Latin" in foreign language, nobody speaks it in the real world.

Lain is useful for some religions and for people into the sciences. which you'd know if you...well. just kidding. I don't think much latin is taught these days.

all out kids should be bilingual like the rest of the world, instead of a bunch of bilingual dummies. I'm learning spanish myself.

No you wait a minute. How do you figure Spanish is the most useful language now?
How about making English mandatory for all these Spanish speakers instead of offering courses in Spanish to them in American schools.

I know an American that stayed on in Germany with wife and kids. His son was kept back 2 years in school and sent for special courses because his German skills were not good enough.
They did not lower the standard for the whole class because of his communication deficiency.
My god these kids are darn near illiterate in English and deficient in most other subjects and you want to mandate Spanish?

No offence but you really really need to wake up out of this fog.

We have a lady in our Sunday School who is a high school Latin teacher. Local public school, still offering Latin. FWIW

interesting. wonder if many kids take it? I get tired of people who are so insecure about English.

Mandarin would probably be more useful -- it'd be nice to be able to talk to the people who will eventually own us outright...

Exactly. When I started school, English was not my primary language. The kindergarten teacher "suggested" to my parents that it would behoove me to be able to speak English. As stated earlier, it's funny how only one special group was (and still is) accommodated...

Definitely more useful than Spanish. At least they loan the US money.
