GM now saying to use 0w40 in 21-24 6.2L

Where I have to disagree is Gm can and have asked for receipts, and they are doing it more and more as their warranty claims are getting bigger and bigger. I have had multiple conversations with different service writers and managers at different Gm dealers. Its not like it used to be. GM is LOOKING to reduce warranty expenses.
I was briefly concerned with that early on. Then I realized the reward [imo] of using a 30 grade oil vs a 20 grade oil in my vehicles was far greater than the risk of being denied a warranty claim. So for me the decision was easy. I would imagine it also helps to know owners or managers of service stations or parts stores should a problem ever arise. Not that I would ever resort to that. ;)

They won't test the oil, that doesn't happen. Its the showing the receipts that is the problem. They see something other than 0W-20 then they will be like warranty denied
Hopefully the warranty book or the owner's manual states that grade is a condition of the warranty. If it doesn't then I don't know what the basis would be for that likely denial. Should everyone be using GM Genuine oil filters too? Or the branded oil?

Thankfully not all dealers are that ignorant. My VW dealer certainly wasn't.

I've been using 40 grade in my 6.2 that's still under powertrain warranty today and I haven't kept a single receipt or bothered to track anything. They never uoa your oil. This is a problem that many of us bitogers have and I understand to a degree but I don't know why we tend to get this non existent oil Boogeyman in our heads that the dealership is going to do an oil analysis and cancel the warranty if the kv100 is beyond 9cst but none of them do. They rarely ask for receipts either. I bet more than three quarters the dealership staff has never even heard of the concept of doing an oil analysis.

All they're going to do is check the oil level to see if it shows something and if it's high mileage enough they might ask for you to pay them a little to pull the valve cover so they can check and they'll take a picture and send it to corporate. It doesn't have to be spotless for corporate to approve it. It can have some varnish as long as it's not too much and there's no sludge and they'll approve it but I doubt GM dealers are doing anything other than just checking the oil level and if the oil isn't black as tar on the stick.
This is true. We’ve only denied one warranty replacement (that I’m aware of) due to 15,000 miles on the original oil/filter, and GM literally gives you a freebie for your first one.
Aftermarket filters, and everything thing else we just do it, but if you neglect it on purpose then it’s on you.

So what do us guys with older 6.2s do? I have a 2018 Yukon Denali with 90k. Do I switch viscosities?
Been running 5w-40 instead of 0w-20 since the year after I got my 2021. Still under powertrain warranty and have no fears. But the most important thing is disabling afm. Having it not run and starve the lifters helps a lot. But they could still fail if it has actuated that much but better now than never. I think it was easier to disable it on that gen, on the new ones it's more hassle.

Yep, Hyundai.
Hyundai/kia is the only exception so I agree and I've recommended someone to just pay kia to service his car as to not give them leeway to deny his warranty later on in his new optima. They're known as having Americas most voided warranty for a reason. Their 10y 100k warranty is just talk and they'll deny over everything under the sun as korean corporations have that horrible culture.

Agreed here.

What I have done before is buy the 0w20 or whatever is required and also buy what I actually want to use. I then take the 0w20 and use it in something else, sell it, or give it away.

The ridicule and bans I got a decade ago saying thin oil was inappropriate was astonishing. This is why I basically withdrew nearly completely from all forums. Overzealous mods, bots, AI, Oligarchs and ZenForo have killed the net.
Sometimes the truth gets hidden somewhere and can be difficult to come by and those who reveal it pay a price, somewhat as you did. When I purchase a car I immediately change the oil and put into it what I want. I'd never use any oil below a Xw-30 grade.

Dexos “R” 0W-40 oil is pretty pricey stuff. I would run the Euro version and do use it in my 6.2 LS 3 Chevy SS. The engine was developed and in service before Dexos was a thing…and it’s a very good oil.

Anyone have a clue what the bottom of the Dexos D List Mobil 1 0w-40 is? I don’t imagine it’s the Euro FS as that’s already called out above.

Thanks for that…I’m living in the past! So which one do you get in your truck at the Chevy shop? I don’t see Dexos on any FS bottles or that listed on the Mobile site…am I missing something?

What is that bottom oil on the chart…Mobile 1 0W-40…but not “FS”
I think they are fast tracking bcs they are all good enough for a 6.2L GM considering the stringent approvals …
They must want some HTHS and in a hurry …

Well, who has actually contacted their dealership about this and got direct confirmation that this recall is real. So far I've seen over 20 secondary regurgitations and one page with a funky home made GM logo. Typing the " recall" number does not yield anything directly from GM. And please don't quote the " GM Authority" page.

If its real, let's see an actual letter from GM. Otherwise its just a thickie fantasy, especially about the part where they give you a new 710 cap that says 0W40. Radiation suit on. ;)
