GF-7 Launch Date

It sounds like higher use of esters and moly could be a part of this change; the properties needed seem to be what they provide.

Looks like the date for GF-7 has been changed -- 3/31/2025 is when it will enter the market. I thought we were years away, but I guess not.

Sounds like there are some incremental, but meaningful changes.
I’m still changing at 3000-4500 miles.

I wonder if any current oils and viscosities that may already exist that are formulated to pass the GF-7 and SQ testing, as in some boutique brands??

I suspect that there are many oils that won't have to change their formulations at all. API SQ isn't as big of an improvement as SP was to SN.

The piston deposit limit for GF-7 is just slightly more stringent than dexos1 gen3, so almost any oil that meets D1G3 will pass this test with no changes (as will most oils that meet API SP, as it's not a huge improvement).

The chain wear limit is tightened up just slightly. Most API SP oils will already pass this test.

Some additive companies like Infineum already claim to meet the minimum fuel economy requirements of GF-7 with their existing D1G3 add packs. I'm guessing most D1G3 oils will already pass this test.

The biggest change is probably the new aged-oil LSPI test, which is the only real new test introduced. Some mid-calcium oils won't be able to pass this test. Any oil with under ~1000-1200 ppm calcium should be fine, but a lot of oils with higher calcium will need to be reformulated.

What chart and/or website are you getting this from? Because I'm quite certain it's not the article in the OP.

It's from various sources. This article mentions the piston deposit merit rating increasing from 4.2 to 4.6 (D1G3 requires 4.5), and the chain wear limit reduction from 0.85% to 0.80%. Some companies like Valvoline already claim that some of their oils do 40% better than the API SP requirement in the chain wear test.

Here's a good article on the aged-oil LSPI test. SAE 2018-01-0934 is a good study on this as well.

Here's the source for the fuel economy of Infineum D1G3 oils. API SQ 5W-30 isn't required to be quite as fuel efficient as API SP 0W-20 (I can't find the source for this.)

Surprised the APD rating isn't higher for GF-7. Just for comparison's sake here is Amsoil SS (no one else gives you this info) piston deposit after the IIIG in 2014. They scored a 7.7.

GF-7/dexos are still at 4.6.

"Deegan argued for a WPD merit rating of 4.6 or higher to ensure protection against the formation of carbon deposits due to oil oxidation. He expressed concerns about the adequacy of a WPD 4.4 merit rating, noting that it falls within the standard deviation of the existing WPD 4.2 merit rating, potentially indicating it may not offer sufficient protection."

"A rating of 5.5 for piston deposits after 100 hours of testing is commonly considered outstanding, while a minimum 4.0 rating must be earned to meet the API SN/ILSAC GF-5 motor oil specification. Even after 200 hours of testing, Signature Series limited deposits and earned ratings well above the minimum threshold. An example of a piston lubricated with a competitor’s oil that failed a normal-length Sequence IIIG Engine Test is included for comparison. Signature Series demonstrated excellent thermal stability and cleanliness properties, easily passing the double-length test."

Am I wrong in thinking that a lot of the extended performance formulations from the big brands, Mobil1 EP, PUP, Castrol Edge EP, etc probably already meet GF-7? I’m looking to pick up some seriously GF-6A discounted oil at Walmart when GF-7 goes active.

Most oil formulations changed back in June / July.

Assuming the oil has been bottled in the last 90? Days. It’s a pretty safe bet it’s already GF7.

Well that might explain why advanced auto has Mobil 1 truck in SUV for $12 per 5 quart jug. Backed the truck up on that one.

Between GF7 and getting rid of inventory before taxes are due, absolutely. Plus moving out old inventory for new cheaper inventory.
