I read a book recently about how processed sugar is really bad for you. I decided to try to eliminate sugar as much as possible and see if it really helps. I had been drinking way too much soda pop anyway.

I have tried it for only about a week and a half and I feel incredibly better. Heck, maybe my posts are getting better! I am going to start drinking coffee again which is actually supposed to be good for you (but watch out for sugar in creamers) and I have been drinking green tea with sweeteners from health food stores. I have not had a soda pop in several days. I had some headaches at first but it was not too bad.

You have to really watch what you eat because everything seems to have sugar. Most dry cereals, for example. You have to get away from all of the processed stuff and seek out real food.

all carbohydrates are sugar. What you want is low glycemic carbs like oatmeal, whole grain, 100% whole wheat bread, and other fiberous sources. Fiber helps aid the body in digestion, and with processed or refined carbs, they remove the nutrients while keeping the calories in the product. Heck, white bread is about equivelant to table sugar. Stick with whole grain, and dont look back.

I am going to try and follow as much as possible the blood type diet for Type A. And use as little sugar as possible.

Heck, try this for a few weeks (going without sugar). It is amazing how much better you can feel.

But you really have to check everything you eat. There is sugar in dry cereal, white bread, etc.

I know three women at work who have tried the blood type diets and lost weight. One woman was Type A and the other two Type B. Another woman at work tried it for a while and said that she felt better, but I don't think she lost weight. She was Type O.

The impact of diet on health is really amazing. My wife was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome a couple of years ago and, as far as I know, conventional medicine has no cure for this. That's why there are so many women struggling with this for upwards of 10-15 years. Can you imagine living life fatigue all the time? It would suck.

Anyways, she met the nutrionist who put her on a low carb, low sugar diet, mostly proteins and veggies. Within six months, she felt like she had beaten the chronic fatigue. Some of her friends who have it can't believe how quickly she's beaten it because they have just learned to live with it thinking there is no cure.

The wife and I started a diet change last year, going to skim milk, whole wheat bread, more green vegetables, less red meat. She has lost about 20 lbs, and me about 12. We're considering it more of a "lifestyle" change rather than a "diet".....

Yep as pablo said once, Refined white flour is the enemy. I would try decaf on the coffee because caffine reduces your abilty to burn fat from what my MD tells me....

Mystic;
Awhile back I adhered to a program by a guy named Ornish for a few months. It's a vegetarian lifestyle - VERY low in fat and simple carbs, high in soy, beans, vegetables, whole grains etc. Felt like a million bucks, lost weight, my cholesterol quickly plummeted to sub 200.
It was really good but we found that we couldn't sustain the level of effort it takes to eat like that. Hours and hours preparing food...never mind it's hard to find low fat, high fiber, whole grain food anywhere but the supermarket so if you have to eat on the road etc your plan goes down the tubes. Plus if you do a stupid thing like eat a steak or pizza it's tough to warm up to bean curd and whole grain pasta again.

You guy's have it down.

If I eat some white bread (or other similar item) once in a blue moon I'm OK.....but if eat some wite flour product two meals in a row, or if I eat it a couple days in a row...I'm wiped. Best just to not eat the stuff.

I CAN eat sprouted wheat Flax bread (from Costco!) and not have any issues.

Haven't studied the caffiene thing - I am addicted to caffeine via my BIG glass of Chinese Long Jin green tea daily.....

I can't live without sugar! Just like Homer!

I use no rifined sugar ..you gotta love those information labels. The vast majority of my diet is protein and fats. Low carb bread ...and NO staches. You can go an amazing long time without a blood sugar drop.

I use HEAVY cream in my coffee.

If you miss sugar ...but can't stand NutraSweet ..use Splenda. Great stuff! It's a little expensive.

The instant variety is not good for anyone, the 5-minute variety is better but not good for anyone who is trying to avoid high glycemic foods. Best to stick to the old fashioned slow stuff.

There is a kind of bread in health food stores called Ezekiel bread. I have tried it in the past. I would have to check it again to see if there is any sugar in it. It is not too bad and it is better if you get it with raisins. Another type is Spelt bread. I have tried the Type A blood type diet in the past and I felt pretty good and lost weight. According to Reader's Digest with their Change One diet, as long as you eat 1300 cal. a day you will lose weight and you can eat different kinds of stuff.

Based on how I feel right now I would have to say that the grocery stores are a disaster in this country. Every box of dry cereal that you check has sugar in it. There is even sugar in bread. You have to eat more natural food. Oatmeal is safe. And more vegetables and fruit.

I do think right now that refined sugar is likely one of the major health risks in this country. After less then two weeks going as completely as possible without sugar I just feel really good. I can breathe, and I have already lost a few pounds. I feel a lot more relaxed and I can sleep better at night.

I think I can probably stick to the Type A blood type diet pretty good. Right now I am not even missing the soda pop, which is a surprise to me because the last time I went to the diet and tried to give up soda pop, I had bad headaches for about two weeks. I was really addicted to Coke and Pepsi. It was much easier this time around. Just a couple of days with headaches. Biggest problem I have is I like green tea but I need to have a sweetener in it and lemon. And I tried coffee again today and it tasted good. It has been a long time since I drank coffee. But I like to put creamer in my coffee. You can find sweeteners like Stevia in health food stores, and just use cream in the coffee. A tiny amount of cream will not hurt you.

Refined sugar (and bleached white flour) are like PTFE in motor oil. Just don't use the stuff!

Another thing a person can do is drink South African Rooibos tea. It is a kind of red colored tea with no caffeine and lots of minerals. It is sort of sweet so you might not have to use any sweetener at all. You can find it in health food stores.

I´ve been off sugar a long time now. I have no more energy crashes after lunch. I am 43 I have a strenuous job, work in the heat, and if I get enough sleep I can still handle it. I still smoke, and I can maintain my energy just due to the diet. I´m also still about 45 lbs too heavy.

Watch the sweetners! I only use Splenda and Stevia. Aspartame is poison, and saccharine isn´t much better.

There are SOOO many people who guzzle sugar, you guys are WAY ahead of them in nutrition.

Also, take your omega 3 capsules.

Good health to you all.

Lance, I just could not believe how much better I felt even after only a couple of weeks getting off sugar to the maximum extent possible. In this society it is very hard to do this, because you have to check everything you eat-there is sugar everywhere. It is in white bread (and white flour is BLEACHED white). White table sugar is also bleached. It is in every dry cereal that I have checked so far. It is hard when you travel because if you stop somewhere to eat there is a possibility of sugar being in all kinds of stuff-even things you would not expect.

The way I am feeling right now I think getting off sugar may be more important than any diet. The Reader's Digest Change One diet might actually make the most sense-you can eat what you want as long as it does not exceed 1300 calories a day.

I am trying hard to eat more natural food, drink coffee and tea instead of soda pop, eat more vegetables and fruit, and avoid sugar as much as possible. And actually if you go to a natural foods place, the basic foods are often very cheap.

I do have a question for anybody who might know the answer. In the health food stores you can find cane sugar that has not been bleached white and still has nutrients in it. Is this safe to use?

everything is sweeter when you lay off the sugar. i remember when i quit eating as much sugar for health reasons, all of a sudden apples are sweet, natural peanut butter is sweet, banannas are sweet, they never tasted that way before.
for my diet i have to eat alot of complex carbs (no atkins here) with protein and a bit of natural sugars such as fruit. it's really just a normal diet but you stay away from crappy foods. it made me feel sooooo much better.
