I have a 2006 4 cyl NA/non-Turbo Forester and a 2005 V8 4x4 4Runner....both with under 70K.

A local guy is selling 25 quarts of his stash of German Castrol 0W-30. Should I stock up? Is it good oil for both my vehicles or maybe one of them? It is hard to find here in Denver.

Both my vehicles call for 5W-30 though the GC is a bit "thicker" so wanted to ask here. If anyone knows, BITOG members know. I do not know if this Euro formulation will cause any problems with my specific vehicles.

GC is one of the best xW30 oil, it can be used in both your vehicles all year. If you can buy it for less than $4/qt I would grab all 25 qts.

I'd snatch it up. Give him $100 for the stash and you'll be set for a while. :-)

There should be very little difference once up at operating temperature. When it's really friggin cold, the GC will protect better.

He want $5 so I'll offer him $100 for all 25 and see what he says. When Pep Boys or Autozone do carry it, it is $7.50-$7.95 a quart. Get this...NAPA has RP for $11.50 a quart.

It goes on sale at Pep Boys and Autozone all the time. It's on sale at Pep Boys right now.
5 qts + PurOne Filter: $26.99
What he's offering aint much of a bargain.

True, but AZ and PB offer frequent oil change specials on Syntec, which with filter lowers the real cost per qt to maybe $4.50 or so.
Also, there was the recent ultra-quirky Castrol rebate on the oil, where if you bought up to six quarts by 7/31/10, and then bought another batch of up to six quarts by 11/30/10, you got back half the cost of the second batch.
This guy can't match that.
I'd offer $75.00 for the whole shebang, and negotiate upwards from there.
No more than $100.00.
Heck, you can get 2010 made GC with a high end oil filter on special for $27.00/five qts with filter.
Finally, I do like the oil, and it would do well in both of your vehicles year 'round.
I especially like it for the Subie, which is why our Forester gets it.

Oh, I have no idea- that's why I was asking. Thicker is probably better for most of the year anyway, especially now that my vehicles have slightly higher mileage and it does get past the 90s here. We also have all those mountain roads to climb. With the 0 rating, it's good for the winter too so I'll just run it all year-round.

Well, I'll hit him at $75. I will also keep an eye on the Pep Boys and AZs. I have never chased oil till now...then I find this forum and oil is suddenly exciting in a way. :)

GC is always a good decision...it seems in non-modified Subarus.
I run it in my mildly modified WRX, which should be a lot harsher on oil than your Forrester, and with good effect. From what I hear, the 2.5 non-turbo motor is easy on oils. However, joining Bitog forces people, as it has with me, to use the cool oils.

I called the guy and he said he sold it already. Plus he was 30 miles away anyway. So while driving around this evening, I found an AZ and walked in. The guys gave me two specials. So I picked up 10 quarts of the stuff plus two FRAM Toughguard filters for $60 plus tax so around $63. When they get some more, I'll pick up four more and be set for a while.

Thanks for all the info and the tips on the specials that AZ and Pepboys run.
