Gear oil for AR?

I am no expert by any means...just sharing my thoughts; most of my firearms lubricating is done with leftover 10w-40 or 15w-40 motor oil from oil changes in my bikes; recently aquired a Ruger AR-556 & the motor oil is what is in it now; I plan on using Maxima brand grease (lithium complex) the next shooting session...have it currently in a Glock 19 for my next shooting session;

if you are going to use grease apply lightly so as to not jam mechanisms or attract alot of crud!

The thinking on lube has changed DRASTICALLY since the Iraq/Afghanistan wars. It is practically impossible to over lube an AR-15. And to be honest, they are much more reliable when they are heavily lubricated. Use a heavy coating of oil before you shoot it, not a light coating of oil.

To " break in " a new AR , I run it wet . For maybe 50 rounds . By that time it has slung off the excess oil .

For the last few years I have been using engine oil + STP + Tranny Fluid for my progressive press . Thought , Why Not ? . Started using it as gun oil . Seems to work fine .

Bought a Chevy that calls for Dexos spec oil . Probably going to use one of the Mobil full synthetic oils . Thinking about also trying it for gun oil .

I also live far enough south that engine oil is not going to get too thick . Further north , I would think , maybe straight tranny fluid ?

God bless
