Was just poking around GF-6.com and came across this video that I hadn't seen before.

It talks about GDI soot and how its a challenge for new engine oil formulas. I thought it was interesting. It has to be pretty new I think - apologies if it was already posted.

Interesting video but it was really just a fluff piece for people that are suspicious that there is an engine under the hood but have no idea how it works and don't want to know.

The question I have is why do I need GDI? My old 4Runner, 2003 4.7 V8 at almost 150K miles of hard use passes California smog at the same test levels as some other more modern GDI engines. My current fuel system is easier to maintain and the parts are cheaper, if needed.

GDI is the future for sure but there's more work to be done.

Thanks for sharing Solarent. With the comparisons made to diesel engines (although a different type of soot), HDEO may be a consideration.

Only if you want higher power levels and fuel economy, thats all. Thats why its there. I like toyota's approach on some of their engines where its BOTH port injected and direct injected. Of course nobody likes the added complexity, intake valve deposits, higher pressures, and higher parts costs.

I don't need one horsepower more. I'll take simple and cheaper over a bit better mileage because I typically keep vehicles longer.

There are success stores with GDI but there's more work to be done and the improved systems will most likely be more expensive and require special expertise and equipment to maintain.

Many modern vehicles are getting away from owner maintenance beyond changing fluids and filters.

Or maybe increased value to Low SAPS formulations. With regards to why we need to understand GDI here is another cool thing I found

Basically the US CAFE Requirements are looking to double fuel economy in the next 10 years. That is going to require some clever engineering considering all we have had to do to get us the 40% increase we've had since 1978

That giant imposed leap in CAFE will be pulled back if Republicans win the whitehouse next time, and keep power in at least one house of congress. Count on it. It does seem way too radical.

You're right though, that CAFE thing will drive us to use hybrids more, and DI will be standard across the board like it already almost is. Meanwhile, China will consume more and more oil at many times the rate of anybody else, with greenhouse gas emissions with new coal electric plants and gasoline consumption off the charts, making all else look foolish.

You might be right - but the fact is that OEM's and everyone in the supply chain have been pouring millions into development already and the wave has already started to move.

Even if the CAFE gets pulled back a little - the technology and efficiency requirements developed will still provide consumer companies with a competitive advantage - so the draw from a consumer standpoint will be there with or without CAFE.

I don't know of anyone here that's claimed CAFE has nothing to do with motor oil... just that even though it does, it doesn't mean poor wear characteristics.
