What is the purpose for the magnesium? Is it considered undesireable by some blenders. Is the mag. the reason for slightly higher iron levels that some GC users see?
 
Delvac 1 has always had a load of Mg in it, and it's pretty well accepted.

(I do understand what you mean regarding high Mg)

Magnesium compounds in motor oils are used primarily as detergents. The Mg atoms play the same role as calcium and sodium atoms do in the detergent compounds but each one behaves differently.
Here's a study comparing some different detergents. Mg detergents do worse in this study. Detergents can affect wear rates too which this study does not go into.
