Gas pump question.

Sometimes I'll head down to the Cattaraugus Reservation to fill up the gas tank of the Accord. The gas prices are usually pretty darn good! I've never had a problem with how my engine runs or fuel economy but was wondering if anyone had some gas pump experience and could answer this question.

On a lot of the gas pumps near me like Mobil, Kwik Fill, Sunoco, etc. the pumps have this device inline with the hose.



Most of the gas pumps on the reservation have these instead.



What are these? Are these filters? Or are they like a quick disconnect system in case someone is a bonehead and forgets to put the nozzle back?

Just being cautious as I wouldn't want to inadvertently be using a pump without a filter and potentially pumping some bad sediment into my car's fuel system.

Are there other filters inside the gas pump?

Its a dispenser box not a pump box. The pump is a submersible and there is one pump per tank.

The filters are internal to the pump box and are regular spin-on types you see on most cars.

The filters I have seen on Texico and Shell pumps are much larger than a large oil filter and say .5u on the side. They are mounted near the bottom behind the panel.

I sometimes buy in Salamanca, on the Reservation. Is that where you buy?

I believe it shuts the fuel flow off at the breakaway.

?? Really? Because, when I have seen these with the covers off, I can see the pump inside. Or, at least what looks like a pump.

Well it has been a gas pump for the first 80 of the 100 years and a dispenser for the last 20. Roughly speaking on the number of years.

I still go to a "gas pump" near the Lebanon Valley Speedway in NY, its unattended and open 24x7.

Certainly Utah could be different, but most modern gas stations have a single pump per tank. If you look not far from the gas fill covers you will see a much larger cover and that covers the pump in the tank. Thats why when a few people are filling their cars at the same time you can feel other people pulling and releasing their lever.

We used to have a small station right up the road from us. Someone started filling, went in to pay after it stopped, then forgot to remove the nozzle before driving off. It didn't have that breakaway. It burned the pumps, the station, lots of gas and melted the station owner's car that was parked about 20 to 30 feet away. Yep, the car melted. It literally dripped on the ground. Totaled the car on the spot.

The only thing not damaged, the person's car that drove off. She did see the fire and came back tho.

They had a nozzle that was still in pretty good shape.
