Diesel storage tank fuel pump conundrum

Insight is much appreciated. I bought a new pump for my little 35 gallon fuel caddy. (The factory pump would last only a year and begin to leak out of every orifice. This one is made in Fort Wayne, Indiana and it has rebuild kits available.) Anyways, after use, the vacuum breaker (black plug) will continue to hiss and near as I can tell, continue filling the outlet hose with fuel. I chicken out after a few minutes and remove the plug so it stops.

Most photos of the Fil Rite 152 show the outlet hose and black plug opposite from what I have. The vacuum breaker can be in either or position, but wanted the fuel to be filtered after the pump and figured it’d be a little bizarre having the filter mounted at an angle from the lower port. If I can’t figure it out, I guess I’ll have to go that route to ensure the vacuum breaker remains the highest point of the system. The fact that it’s hissing is telling me it’s working, but I am not sure on that either.

Don’t judge me by my tape and dope job. I’m an electrician. Not a plumber. 🤡

It seems that the plastic breather plug can be in either position. The hissing you hear is not fuel moving. It is air entering to "break the vacuum".

Fill rite shows this installation. You can use any combo of elbows (90, 45, street) and nipples to locate the filter/outlet where you please. They show a 90 degree street elbow directly out the top.

Mine is set up like this, keeping the plastic plug in the top. It still hisses. My first elbow is a 45 with nipples, then a 90 street elbow out the filter.

I was taught not to use galvanized with diesel - it can cause the zinc to flake off?

Shouldn't that filter be verticle so the water will drop to the bottom?
I never thought of that. Good point and will likely make the change.

I assumed it had some sort of absorbent material like what’s in a diaper. Supposedly it becomes hard to pump when it needs replaced.

10 million dollar question. How long should it be hissing after fueling up?

I don’t know that about galvanized not playing well with diesel. That being said, the pieces they used appear to be galvanized too.
