Since last winter my turbo is noisy when engine is cold. When it warms up it is still noticeable, but rather normal.
It's a variable geometry, integral to the manifold type.

So my questions are:
Are those Chinese Garrett's a knock off or they are genuine parts?
How safe is to drive like this since there's no other symptoms like increased oil consumption, smoke, power loss,CEL , and it does quiet down on with operating temperatures?

put your fingers on the shaft of the impeller. Pull back and forth then rotate side to side..if you feel movement in back and forth and side to side your bearings are shot.

Probably find more experienced turbo users-builders on a diesel forum. I see a lot of advanced discussion on changing out the fans and rebuilding on them way more than this oil forum.

You might want to look into a CHRA cartridge. I would avoid the Chinese parts.

Did not. How? Car does have some lag when cold, it goes away later.

I did. Most are from China, labeled as Garrett. Are they real Garrett made in Garrett's factory in China or usual garbage?
There's a company in Slo , Zgajner , selling complete kits for 350. Similar here to. I'm comfortable with that, as long I can keep this under 500 I'm happy.

Just don't wanna buy Chinese [censored] and do it again next year.

Counterfeit parts from China are commonplace. If they will counterfeit a 10c resistor (and they do) or capacitor (very common), they will counterfeit a turbo. Best answer to your questions will be directly from Garrett. eMail them and ask if they know of fake parts with their mark, and how to identify them.
