It sits in a cabinet right about my furnace. I've been very pleased with it. The A-coil under my furnace is as clean as the day it was installed. That was 12 years ago.

My Carrier system uses the same filter. I swear it holds a few pounds of dirt when I change it.

Any thoughts on electrostatic precipitators? I installed one 15 years ago. I did it myself for $150. It doesn't seem to collect a lot of dust. But it does have a washable metal-mesh prefilter to catch the big stuff.

Thanks for bringing this up... I need to change mine badly... however, I don't use the air alot. I use the 3M Filtrete that gets the allergens out because my wife has asthma. I'm wondering if the normal cheapie ones will be as effective as the restrictive 3M one.

If you guys need a better way to filter allergens, try using cheese cloth on the inside part of the ductwork, inside the outlet vent.
I guarantee if you look into the ductwork, you will see all kinds of nasties floating around inside the trunk line.

Don't be fooled by filters on the intake end, there is hundreds of times more dirt trapped in the ductwork.
Just take a look for yourself.

I've been using Ace's 90-day pleated (white) filters. It's real nice, and half the price of 3M. They run $4-->$5. I write the date on it, and change every 3 months. My HVAC guy recommended the 90-day (higher quality) filters vs. the blue ones. I guess everyone has an opinion.

Worrying about dust in ducts is a moot point if you have carpeting. Affordable filters designed for smaller particles tend to be either more restrictive or need to be changed more often.

My guess the only way the cheap o's will work is leave them in for alittle while and if it doesnt work im sure the wifey will let you know.

That's where it's located in my system.
