This company (Logika Technologies) has a YouTube channel showing off what their specialized cameras can do. These particular videos are from inside a furnace.

There is some serious engineering involved into building these cameras. It appears the camera itself does not go into the furnace but a borescope type optical probe that is liquid cooled internally and externally as well. The lens must be made out of some special material, maybe ceramic that can maintain its shape and clarity at these temps.

Pushing the boundaries of material & there must be applications where this may be needed. Very "cool" to see inside the furnace!

That is neat. Coming up with automotive applications is going to be a fun mental exercise. Back in the 80s, properly setting the timing on a GM or Ford automotive diesel involved removing the #1 glow plug and installing a dummy plug with a glass center. An optical sensor was attached to "see" the combustion flash and the tool reconciled this with a crank position probe to make a timing measurement. Without the optical sensor attached one could see the orange diesel combustion flash. Gunson in the UK makes a spark plug for seeing the color of combustion in a gas engine. It might be fun to play with one on a carbureted engine. A lot cheaper than a 5 gas analyzer. Setting the Logica up to monitor while driving has possibilities. Just something to ponder before falling asleep.
