Full Throttle Testing of LS1 Corvette Engine

Yes, we do have a little better skiing than just the haystacks!

The golfcourse that I live on actually has a track setting machine for cross country.... and I ski the course almost every day - only a couple of miles but fun and fast, Asne waxable ski's.

Sundown Mountain, Chestnut mountain: Both close, both have about 475 vertical feet. Not the Rockies but fun anyway.
Skied Mt Lacrosse (Lacrosse, Wisconsin) last weekend.

Knowing that I can run a Corvette at full throttle for hours on end could make Aspen seem closer!!! Do they take your ski equipment away when they lock you up??

I am not too concerned about how the oil could last so long in the 2 test that are talked about here , the LS1 and the BMW .I am still trying to figure out how they got the dyno's to last that long ! If they used a water dyno, then the parts tend to wear and need replacing ,such as the LS1 test. If they use a Dyno Jet brand on the BMW test, then it is not a "loaded " test, just spinning a wheel . Now they do have some dyno jet's that are loaded, but who knows what they used, and if it was a loaded dyno then the heat build up would be massive ! They have to cool off after a while . Just saying ...
At any rate, both test look pretty good, and nice to know if you take care of an engine it will last a long time.

I still think the records the ZR-1 set back in 1990 are still very impressive using off the shelf Mobil 1 , just stopping for gas and driver change.

100 miles (160 km) at 175.600 mph (282.601 km/h)
500 miles (800 km) at 175.503 mph (282.445 km/h)
1,000 miles (1,600 km) at 174.428 mph (280.715 km/h)
5,000 km (3,100 mi) at 175.710 mph (282.778 km/h) (World Record)
5,000 miles (8,000 km) at 173.791 mph (279.690 km/h) (World Record)
12 Hours Endurance at 175.523 mph (282.477 km/h)
24 Hours Endurance at 175.885 mph (283.059 km/h) for 4,221.256 miles (6,793.453 km) (World Record)

I believe in the ZR-1 enough to have owned two, a '91 and a '95. I still have the '95 with less than 3K miles on the clock with every thing original except for the battery.

"Every one of those engines looked absolutely new when we tore them down."

Guys, this is not exactly a precise engineering term, with exact measurements. It's meaning can vary and I am sure there was wear.

IF it was in a straight line, then I hope you are implying that your car was extensively modded.
Pure stock to pure stock, those P cars were NOT as quick (unless, of course he just could NOT drive worth a DA*N).
IF it was through turns, (or "twisties", as the riceboyzz would call them) then all bets are off.
Although, once the 4th gen f body platform's suspension is modded, all of you import worshippers would be quite suprised at the handling, yes, solid axle and all!

I'm a domestic man, just not a fan of fbodies. Excellent cars on paper. Just don't seem to hold up. And, NEVER get one with a 4L60E in it. Unless you want rebuilds every 60k-90k miles. I got a 2000 T/A WS.6 6-speed and 99 C5 4L60E in my family. I've rebuilt the 99's transmission at 90K miles driven by a 38 year old woman who never floors it (she's scared).

Tell me they came from the factory to take abuse, and I'll tell you that I must have a hearing problem because I thought you were telling me a joke.

How many power steering coolers and pumps has your's had? Or did you have the cooler option, it may have been a WS.6 thing. They blow like freight trains.

Well my 1998 Corvette with 125,000 miles on it (daily driver) has only had 2 problems: one headlight gear and one oil pressure sensor. Pretty reliable car, it is a 6 speed manual BTW.

What does the transmission durability have to do with the engine durability (the subject of this test)?

I don't know just how well you take care of your stuff (or not), but mine has ~130K miles of abject abuse (year 'round daily driving in ALL conditions, autocross, drag race, AND open track use, MANY, MANY revs to and above redline).
Yes, I DO take care of general maintenance maniacally, but the ONLY non-wear and tear (brakes, clutch, tires, belts, hoses, bulbs, etc.) item I had to replace (and it might even be considered 'wear and tear' due to my nonstock tension on the belts from the underdrive crank pulley) was the stock water pump at ~85K miles.
I installed an Evans at that time and it has been perfect since.

Yes, I do have the factory power steering cooler (my ONLY option, besides the summer Gatorbacks when it was ordered new 10/99), but I am contemplating ditching that and getting an air to p.s. fluid cooler in the spring (to hook up to the p.s cooler stock hoses).

I thought the C5 had the 4L80E? My wifes 94 Formula had the LT1 with a 4L60E. Maybe that was your problem, 60e instead of the 80E.....

The C5s auto trans is the 4L60E, exactly the same as the f-body only it's mounted in the rear.
