fuel pump noisy, use MMO ??

I am getting a "hummm hummm hummm" sound as I come to a stop in my 95 Cutlass Supreme 3.1 L V6 with 143k miles. From the back. I am guessing its the fuel pump. Car starts/runs/accelerates great. Don't hear it with a full tank.

I assume its the fuel pump? Techron was in the tank when this started though I'm not blaming it. Should I be worried? Should I try some MMO in the gas? A fuel pump should wear out somewhat slowly right, not something usually goes from 100% to 0% instantaneously??

MMO it or no?

Well BXD: Use the MMO your car will love it.
I use religiously in all my vehicles however I
don't think it will save your fuel pump. The
biggest killers of fuel pumps and fuel injectors
is ethanol gas. The MMO will definetly help both
Stay away from BP Sunoco Speedway and most
Marathon stations. Shell stations don't blend ethanol and there are two Marathon stations
that pump straight gasoline. Being as you are
from Cleveland the Marathon's are

1. 252 Columbia Road in Olmsted Falls

2. W137th and Brookpark just off 480

BTW a fuel pump will go instantly without warning

Some fuel pump housings become partially exposed by low fuel levels. Maybe that sound you hear is always there, but gets muffled by the gas when your tank is full. This is just a guess.

try taking a load of the pump with a new clean fuel filter works for me

Fuel pump is either working too hard or failing, bruce381 is right,cheap way to tell is changing the fuel filter.

I like FP60 by Lubecontrol.com for consistant lubricity improvement and cleanliness gains.

I've had the car two years. I've replaced the fuel filter since I got the car. I am very particular about my cars and this is definitely a new noise.

With a 1200 mile drive to FL coming up, I have scheduled an appt to have the pump, strainer, and filter replaced. Around town I don't mind living on the edge, but being stranded in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night isn't worth it.

I'll try and keep the alcohol to a min in the future.

143,000 miles?...just renew the pump. Feel good about noticing the new noise and figuring it out. I had a 100,000+ mile fuel pump begin singing...the Mrs. never heard anything, and it was clear as day to me.

I agree with Terry regarding using FP60.

My BMW has a buzzy fuel pump because of age and wear, and the one in my chevy pickup is loud to begin with (nothing wrong, you just hear it). FP at the usual dose has had the uncommon ability to quiet the pumps down.

MMO gives a quieter idle in my BMW, compared to FP, but FP definitely quiets the pump, unlike MMO.

Neither additive has improved MPG in a statistically signifciant manner.

Go with FP60 and reap the excellent lubricity improvements.

The main pump in my 528e is original At 306k it is quiet. The transfer pump has never worked but does not affect performance in the eta. I attribute its longevity to only running out of gas once. I burned out a Bosch pump in less than a minute bench testing it dry. Advice about the filter is good. A clogged filter killed the pump on my wife's 528e. The pump seized and I couldnt blow through the filter.

You probably damaged it by either running out of gas or running it low. Never run it under a 1/4 of a tank, the gas acts as a coolant for the pump. I learned the hard way with my 92 Cutlass the gauge was on empty and I was driving around looking for the cheapest gas. Well I ran out and coasted into the gas station and that was all she wrote. Pep Boys $300.

The fuel pump in my Blazer makes that humming noise too but I'm not going to change it because of that.

a little whining is normal with some pumps but if it got suddenly loud and makes that buzzing noise too change it or carry good walking shoes or a aaa card.

Fuel pump was replaced yesterday, along with strainer and filter. Gonna keep it above 1/4 tank whenever possible from now on, though I can't complain too much about getting 143k miles out of a fuel pump.
