Fuel/Emissions Hose or Transmission Hose For Catch Can?

Duralast has transmission hose $2.99 a Foot and Fuel/Emission Hose $3.29 a foot. Which is better for a catch can? I suppose the softer fuel hose would be better for mounting. In this size, autozone isn't labeling any option as "PCV Valve hose" like they do with some other sizes.

I'd go with the transmission hose as it's oil compatible which is what PCV vapor is. Oil vapor. You could probably get away with the Fuel hose but it could very well get mushy over time..

Try O'reilly or Advance auto they have Gates brand (which I've never had a failure) trans oil hose in stock. Autozone is too busy asking "make, model, year" stupid questions to help.

Gates can be obtained in a few places, but it's pretty expensive. Napa is like $10/ft, rock auto is only $5/ft but it's in 3 foot pieces and has shipping, and Amazon is 4.5 feet for $20 for some weird oem version of gates unless you buy a 25ft spool. For the transmission I'm absolutely going gates, for the catch can I was hoping to save. These $25 catch cans come with garbage hose so I wanted to put something better. Idk why AutoZone labels it fuel/emissions or just pcv valve hose when transmission would be more durable like I thought.

I just bought some Gates brand trans oil cooler hose from Oreilly, it was for an oil cooler on an engine.. Was about $6.49/foot that was 3/8" inner diameter hose. I agree, I wouldn't buy that huge spool of 25ft, that's crazy. But ya Napa being the most expensive doesn't surprise me, they always do that. And Autozone is doing some odd recommendations lately, actually had an Autozone manager argue with a friend of mine over using transmission oil cooler hose on (of all things) an actual oil cooler! lol.. something odd over there I tell ya!

yup you're thinking is correct, don't let Autozone confuse you, they're the ones that are confused. (y)

And remember that the better transmission hose is cheaper than this fuel/emissions hose for some reason.

Put " real" Magnefine trans filter external filter cans on all my automatic tranny's. I plumbed it all out with 3/8" trans hose from Amazon. It's called " Evil Energy". This has got to be the best tranny hose I've ever used. Used fuel injection clamps on the connections. The hose barely " mushed" out, after cranking down on the clamps.... Has tons on strands/webbing in it. Even came with some stickers for the tool chest. They also make hard to find radiator to cooling hose fittings, transmission cooler fittings, trans to cooler hose fittings. Covered up everything with high temp wire loom and black zip ties. No more droppin the pan to change the filter. Now just change Magnefine every 5k, spill and fill fluid from pan plug every 10k. These Magnefine's work great with tranny's that have internal filters that you can't access. BUT, beware of the knock offs. They are all over the place.

Emissions hose has to be rated for permeability so if you use it for an EVAP system for example it can't "sweat" more than a certain amount of vapor.

Transmission hose is better for pressure and for holding (hot) oil in, as stated.

To me though a PCV system is mostly vapor and I'd use emissions or 30R7 low pressure fuel hose.

Get out ! Never knew that about Emission tubing/hose. And here I was for almost 50 yrs piecing out rotten emission hose with whatever I had layin around in the garage. Learn somethin new every day. Thanks :)

I would use emission hose or something rated to handle oil so that it doesn't soften the hose and cause it to collapse under vacuum.

This is the way. I went down this rabbit hole when installing my catch can. SAE 30R7 is the spec you need. I used this from NAPA:

https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/NBHH187
So you are saying i should use this https://www.autozone.com/plumbing-hosing/rubber-hose/p/duralast-3-8in-fuel-and-emission-hose-sold-by-the-foot/4956_0_0?searchText=3/8+fuel+hose

Instead of this? https://www.autozone.com/transmission-and-drive-train/transmission-cooler/p/duralast-3-8in-transmission-oil-cooler-hose-sold-by-the-foot/4948_0_0?searchText=3/8+transmission+hose&redirectUrl=true

It looks like this kit is coming with a bunch of Evil Energy Hose, Which i guess @50yr Street Mech Claims to be very good, so i may be able to just use that included hose.

Why did you ask what hose to use if they were already included in the kit?

I didn't realize that you had a kit already, thought you were putting one together. Yes the brand @50yr Street Mech mentioned is the same type of hose I had mentioned before. There's nothing wrong with using an oil hose for crankcase vapors and it'll make sure it lasts a long time. and that's why your kit includes that exact type of hose.

No need to second guess this..

Because it wasnt going to come with hose, for like 8 dollars more i found a way to have it come with some Evil Energy hose that wasnt random garbage clearly not for this application, so now im going to see if its any good when it comes before i purchase from autozone. Most of these kits do not come with proper hose

I no lie. That evil energy is pretty good stuff. Never seen it come it a kit though. Just different diameters and length. They do sell a handful of different fittings. All aluminum and well made. Got some good weight to them and the barbs are ridiculously barby :)

Does it say what the hose material is made from? I would assume that the transmission hose should be rated for higher temperatures than the fuel hose, but the fuel hose in theory should be more resistant to alcohol and hardening.

I'm no expert, ( especially since I'd been piecing out emission tubing with whatever tubing I could find in the garage for years on end ), on this matter....but fuel hose can handle oily stuff for a little while, before it turns into an old banana sitting on the counter or table too long. Then it goes MUSH. I'd go with tranny hose since it's made for oil......BUT...check with the real experts here on this forum. You'll get you're answer.

Yes, the hose that meets SAE 30R7 is designed to resist oil vapors and vacuum.

Evil Energy sells hoses that they claim to meet this standard, so if the included hose is SAE 30R7 then use it
