Fuel Dilution problem.

GMBoy, done, done, and done... All is fine.

First issue in 320K KM's (192K Miles) No other problems...

I was out tonight doing some shopping and the truck is running even better than yesterday. I guess the long drive to Niagara Falls did it some good and the ECM got used to the clean MAF and the new O2's.

Mileage is looking excellent thus far as I burn't just under a half a tank (36 litres / 8.18 U.S. Gallons) of fuel today and got 325km's to that and I would have gotten about 300 only according to my log book. (Using Scan-gauge to see exact litres used)

I think fuel dilution might just be fixed...

I used fuel additives once upon a time way back.. in my opinion it's the next best thing to oil additives meaning your pouring your money down the drain... All I seen the fuel additives (aftermarket mind you) do is add deposits to the spark plugs... my mechanic also confirmed this along with owners manual and a chilton's manual calling out the spark plug deposits coming from fuel additives.. I now never run fuel additives, there is no reason to and the commercials you see with the fine mist verses weak stream is just another mass marketed money pit that is worthless... and may even be causing your "fuel dilution" on paper however I have not read over any of the recent threads stating the fuel dilution only the recent 20 or so in the past couple of hours ok maybe last day or two

During this UOA I hadn't used any fuel additives to make sure it wasn't that causing the problem.

Also my used oil analysis in the past using my fuel additives didn't cause any dilution problems.

I hear what you are saying though...

With Fuels today containing ethanol which leaves them "dry" I would think twice about not dosing a tank here/there with some lubricating additive.

As for cleaning Top-Tier Fuels with all their amines and ethanol they will keep your injectors clean enough on their own unless the engine is abused with poor quality fuels in the past and you need a clean up.

I just wanted to throw the info I had experienced in the past ith hopes it may help out some... maybe the MAF cleaning, and the O2 replacement will solve your problem... only time will tell now.

Stevie, I don't know about elsewhere, but in our neck of the woods, Shell 91 octane has 0% ethanol. I don't know about other brands of gas. The mid grade has 5% and the regular has 10%.

So after replacing the O2 sensors and tracking the mileage over multiple tanks for a better average it's slightly better but almost the same.

I'm thinking my problem might be the Temperature Sensor so I'm going to take the temperature of the coolant and compare that to the OHM meter reading I get from the sensor at the same temperature and see if they are accurate as per the technical service manual.

Either that or dump this oil and put fresh stuff in and then wait a few thousand KM's and do a follow up UOA and see if the fuel dilution is still high.

Pull a sample, send it to Toromont and see how you are doing dilution-wise. That would be my first course of action before I tried anything else. That's the only way to know if you've currently fixed your problem or not.

Yeah I'm home today working on stuff and just changed my Transfluid and I was thinking about doing the oil as well so that it's fresh for when I go up to Parrysound this weekend and Ottawa the next. Then it would be good miles on the oil for a sample to Toromont on fresh oil that was in there just after the 02's were replaced with ideal conditions of long highway drives.

If the numbers come back high I'm inclined to think the Temp. Sensor is buggered as I just can't see these style injectors having issues.

When I drained the trans-fluid today I saw lots of clutch material sticking to my drain plug (magnetic) and lots of shiny metalic goopy goodness floating in the oil and shimmering in the light. I think my trans might be wearing out. Shifts great though and this was the longest run I did on the full synthetic fluid (100K KM's) so... Not sure.

The filter apparently isn't replaceable but I'm going to check into that. Problem is that the pan is on the front of the trans and not the bottom and it's a hekuva job to take it off so I might just forget about it with this many miles and drive it as is until it needs a rebuilt and just change the fluid more often.

Sorry for the ramble...

No problem.

If it were me (but I know it isn't) I'd get a filter-head that takes an FL-1A style filter, fit it to the trans cooler lines, and run a Donaldson SYNTEQ filter on it. 10-micron rating on that puppy, it should catch just about anything you've got floating around.

How many Km do you have on this OCI thus far?

I have 2500 KM's on this OCI but it was mostly from before the 02 sensors and only about 1100 at best after the 02 sensors...

As for the trans I would do that with my next vehicle... Too many miles on this one to screw with it at this point.

If they rebuild the trans I will modify it then.

Thanks for the idea!

In theory.... The fuel dilution, if fixed... should have (mostly) burned off. I'd run the sample anyway. Toromont is cheap, no real reason not to.

Then follow up with one on the next OCI to confirm.

I will just change the oil and then run the test... I bought a coolant sensor as well going to change this before the oil as well just in case it is the culprit. It was cheap and most likely would have failed soon anyways because of the mileage I have on it.

As for the transmission fluid it is Amsoil Multi-Vehicle ATF. Comes out Cherry red clean like it goes in and leaves the metal parts inside the transmission I can see very clean.

Just lots of clutch wear this time around compared to changing it out at 50K KM's last time.

But again I have over 300K KM's on the truck now so I guess it's normal that things are a bit sloppy.

Shifts fine though and silky smooth.

Maybe just clutch sludge that it dislodged from the Hyundai stuff I used the first 80K KM's ?

Perhaps sir, perhaps. Only time will tell.

I've never had anything come out with my fluid or on the drain plug, but I'm about 100,000Km short of your mileage.

Yeah these are known for this kind of clutch garbage in the oil and on the plug... I had more with the Hyundai stuff so that is why I'm not concerned.

ONN: I replaced the coolant sensor. Burn't my hand a bit because I was too impatient to wait for the engine to cool down.

Broke the plastic clip for the wire that is clipped onto a coil pack mounted in the same area.

But all is well. Took it for a spin to Timmies and I don't notice any difference. Will have to see what the used oil analysis shows.

Going to change the oil later.

Engine Enema:

Ok so I'm going on a road trip that will entail 4 hours of highway driving each way tomorrow as I'm attending my moms side of the family, family reunion so I decided to add a bottle of Moto-Master Ultra Fuel System Cleaner which is known to have lots of PEA in it. It also claims on the bottle that "Nothing on the market is stronger or more effective". I guess they mean the Canadian Market.

Anyways, I added that and then filled up (from 1/4 tank) with Shell V-POWER 0% Ethanol fuel which according to them has 5 times the cleaning agents that regular top-tier fuel requires.

That combined with my new O2 sensors, coolant sensor (Replaced anyways) and clean MAF/Amsoil EAA Air-filter and new plugs I should be set for a good fuel system cleaning.

On the way back I will refill once the low fuel light comes on with Top-Tier and then some Lucas to lubricate the fuel pump and injectors etc. as I usually do after a good cleaning.

Then I will change the oil when I get home (due then) and drive normally for the rest of the week before taking another road trip for work driving 5 hours each way on the next weekend.

That should clean things out no?

I drove almost 700 KM's yesterday (437 miles) and ran that fuel system cleaner in the tank until almost empty and then refilled with V-POWER 0% ethanol.

Engine is very smooth and more responsive now so I think there was some gunk in the system.

I'm going to change the oil today with RLI 0w30 as I want to use this up from my stock.

Hoping that a used oil analysis on this fill will come back with normal fuel dilution levels now that all this work has been done.

Will post here once it comes back.
