Free Antivirus gets 100% detection across the board

I know I've been plugging the new (well, fairly new compared to AVG and Avast) Avira Antivir, but from everything I've found, it is simply a top notch product. Check out how it faired against the big boys

Antivir gets 100% from VB100

I know since version 7 has come out that many people have been having problems with it, especially updates. However, it's been FLAWLESS on my computer now since I got it a month ago.

I don't know what's happened to Bitdefender. It used to be right up there with Kaspersky and Nod32 but in all the recent tests, it's done pretty lousy.

did some research, and it seems like this USED to be a pretty nice program before version 7.xx came out. I'm a bit weary of the (-) reviews on download.com, where they show the ver 6.0 but actually takes you to the version 7xxx download...

But if you had no problems, that's really good...I might try it, although I am very staisfied with the latest AVG free I have...

AVG has fallen from the tree, computer associates has a free one year trial of etrust antivirus for download, it's pretty good.

Yea, sine I started using Firefox with Noscript over a year ago, I haven't gotten any spyware or malware on my machine. Dumping Exploder is probably the single best thing anyone could do to secure their computer.

Since dumping Mcafee, my computer is a rocket ship now too!

Anyone have any experiance with Comodo anti virus. I cant find any comparisons on the web, but when I downloaded the firewall the antivirus was available as well and I decided to give it a try, no trouble so far. Just wondering in terms of effectivness and what not. Thanks.

Comodo's free antivirus SUCKS really really bad. It just came out within the last couple months and the folks at Wilder's who tested it say it is worthless. However, the Comodo free firewall is fantastic and beats all the free firewalls in testing.

I'd honestly try Antivir. If that doesn't work, then either AVG or Avast. Avast does have a lot of additional cool features that the others don't have. I'm pretty good with Antivir now so if you get it and have questions, feel free to ask. You do have change some things in the configuration for maximum security as the default settings are mainly for low system usage and ease of use (the heuristic is turned off by default for example).

I just downloaded Avast but will probably switch to AntiVir here shortly cause I am just not understanding the layout of Avast at all.


Alright, its not that I dont understand it, the layout just sucks, I like to see what it is scanning and Avast dosent show that, the center looks like a darn radio for petes sake. AntiVir it is.

I'm doing well with Symantic NAV. It goes on sale at least once a year at Frys for between 0 and $10 after rebates.

The last three years I have bought the 3 license package of the stand alone version of NAV for $10 or less.

Symantecs other security and fix-it stuff (except partition magic) has caused me more problems than it has cured, so I don't use it.

I also use the Free Zone Alarm and AdAware.

I frequent Wilder's Security forum alot and it looks like Avira is getting the kinks worked out of version 7. In fact, I think I got the latest release (the problem free one). Many people who have downloaded it recently are reporting it's working great.

One thing that really makes me angry is Grisoft (makers of AVG) just bought out Ewido. So hopefully Ewido doesn't turn into a P.O.S.

my combination of AVG free, Spybot, Adaware SE, SpyWareBlaster and of course F-Fox keeps my computer running pretty safe as far as I can see..no spyware adaware problems so far...and I also use CCleaner and SpiderBite, which helps keep things smooth.

AVG (which works 1000x better than the Norton and Mcaffee I had, which bogged the pc terribly) caught stuff where others failed, at least in my case. It may not be the best, but it's worked flawlessy, and doesn't bog the pc down at all.

However, I'm interested in newer programs...if Antivir 7 fixes those bugs, I might try it, too.

SpiderBite is a program that gets rid of hidden URL's in the temp folders that doesn't get cleaned with just "delete temp files" or "clear history" in IE.
SpiderBite clears EVERYthing. you can choose to clear from just windows or from the complete hard-drive.

I got it from my brother-in-law. will have to ask him where he got it.

Cool, thanks 97. Ccleaner does the same thing I think, but now it has secure file deletion so index.dat files can't be brought back.

One should also consider hueristic abilities since a new virus without a signature file within one's A/V can slip past the A/V's detection ability.

Yes obbop; Antivir got 100% in polymorphic viruses and such in that test. AVG free doesn't even have heuristic detection and the paid version in that test did horribly.

I'm not trying to bash AVG users, just trying to show some facts and let people decide for themselves. I finally got a false positive with Antivir and they've resolved it hopefully; Antivir and Spysweeper DO NOT like each other on my machine.

Spysweeper bogged my PC down so bad I flicked it. Spware Doctor 4.0 loaded and runs much better. PC Authority just gave it the tick as best Anti-spware. Our sales Manager had a trojan that all the companies IT protection like Trend Micro couldn't fix. On Tuesday I suggested he contact IT and try Spyware Doctor 4.0. It removed trojan and a few other infections. It works. Nice interface too, typical PC Tools.

Cool beans sprint. I don't thin Spysweeper is a bad program at all, it's one of the best out ther. I just don't see the use in paying for it, or any security software at this point. There's too many good free ones.

Careful a lot of the free ones are Malware themselves. Theres a list somewhere if only I could remember where.

I'm aware. All the free ones I've posted are legit. The Active Virus Shield I posted about in another thread "may" be spywarish (definetally the toolbar is, so don't get that); the fellas at Wilders security forum are testing it to see if and where it phones home. If it goes to Kaspersky's server, then there will be heell to pay!

I know that list.........it's the rogue antispyware list. You can find varients of it through google.
