This filter was in service on a relatives 1997 Acura RL with approx 150k miles
The odometer is dead but it does not get driven much I would guess less than 4k for the annual OCI

Oil used was Valvoline Maxlife syn blend 5w30 plus a can of the liqui moly motor oil saver as a test. Car uses/leaks a bit of oil and probably had about quart of top up added.

I'll take it to work, 20 min drive couple times per month and a 1.5 hr drive every other month.

Media was more wavy than a Wix

So in this pic I had just pulled it out of the can.
I hadn't even set it down.
Initially I was taking a pic of the sharp edge of the bypass mating surface when I saw the spring on the bypass valve....

It was only hanging on with one of the hooks....

I then tried messing with it, compressing a bit so it would slip under both hooks and stay there.
I set it a couple times and with slight pressure it slid off and was lopsided again.
Finally I was able to get it in a spot where it was making contact with the 2 hooks, the 2 flat edges of the bypass clip part were not making contact.
At this point the hooks would not fall off with moderate pressure from my fingers.

Definitely caught some grit in the pleats.

Not much in the can. I'm used to seeing a fine silt.

I've never seen this before, it is somewhat common or yet another nail in the ultra coffin?

The bypass valve wasn't configured right during production. Once the black piece with the 4 hooks on it is seated right with the spring there's no way those hooks will come out of the spring during use. I've taken the bypass valve off the spring by hand, and it's not that easy to do purposely. You might want to play the lottery with that kind of luck.

Wrong spring diameter? Weakened plastic? Both highly doubtful.
Never seen that happen. That's nuts. Don't expect anything from Fram though..they don't care. Luckily, it doesn't seem to happen but here we are.. could this get worse? I gave up...

Mb the spring larger at the top then bottom? And it was flipped?
Should I dig it out of the trash?

On the one I took apart from a Fram OG Ultra, the spring was the same diameter on both ends, and doesn't matter which direction it's installed. Try to remove the black piece after it's assembled correctly into the leaf spring, and you'll see how hard it is to separate the two pieces. It would never separate in use unless a couple of the 4 arms with the hooks failed.

It probably sealed, but the pressure it opens at would have been off (less PSI would open the valve) because the spring wasn't fully compressed like it would have if all 4 hooks were engaged.

Stating the obvious, that's a fail. And if your guesstimate of interval anywhere close, that media pleating looks terrible. 20k mi. rating, In my observation current XG 'max out' at ~7500 mi. What a flashlight test might show, would seem least of it here.

Thanks for c&p.

Thanks for the C&P. Not the best looking ultra, thats for sure. I use them fairly often and have never seen anything like that.

This filter was a made in USA?

Also I have stopped using Fram filters and made a switch over to Supertech filters and haven't looked back.

Nice post and nicely organized garage! Those pleats look really dark for 4k IMHO.
