Fram Ultra on diesel tractor?

The tractor gets used every week or two during the summer and fall for probably an hour at a time. During the winter I try to run it atleast once a month and let it get up to temperature. Probably 20 or 30 minutes. It's still under warranty so I guess I'll just have to go with the dino oil and change it annually to comply with that. Will the Ultra filter work with dino oil? I just changed it tonight and used Rotella T4 15W40 and a Wix 51064. That's the filter Wix catalog calls for. Just seems like a waste of oil and filters to change it so often. I actually enjoy doing it though. Thanks again for all of the help and suggestions.

A 3TNV84T I believe. It's real stingy with the fuel so not a lot of soot generated.I've been using the JD filters with Dino oil and it stays clear on the dipstick. Just wanted to know if the Ultras would work. Anxious to hear your comments. Also wonder if I might be better off using Dino oil and a standard filter and just change the oil and filter more often.

Fram only lists PH3593A for your application. Perhaps the efficiency of TG3593A and XG3593A is too high for sooty oil, leading to early clogging.

Joe, worst case condition for the oil filter would be the winter starts. This is when the 15W40 would be the thickest and the delta P across the element the greatest. The 20-30 minutes operating time is probably not enough time to get the sump temperature to the boiling point. You might need an hour with a load on the engine to get the sump temperature up.
Since you have had one bad filter event, I suggest one or more of the following solutions:
1. Run the engine longer with a load in the winter.
2. A synthetic oil filter would tolerate water better and the Ultra is wirebacked.
3. Use 10W30 instead of 15W40.
Good luck with the path you choose.

That is not the reason why it is not listed in the "applications".

These engines do NOT have high volume oil pumps - I'm guessing maybe a little more than a gallon per minute at operating RPM. The oil filter will NEVER go into bypass at such a low flow rate, let alone get clogged.

I worked on one older Yanmar a few years back, and the PH3593 looked like it had been on there for 20 years. It was fine.

The bad filter event I had was a manufacturer defect and had nothing to do with the oil or its usage. If you checked out my other post "51334 opened " you'll see it is a brand new filter that may have had 30 minutes run time on it with new oil. The oil cooler is also an oil heater and brings oil temperature up when it's cold. Thanks again for the info.

It may even be simply an oversight. There are some small JD gassers where the Ultra doesn't show up either in the application guide.

I know this is an old post but I wanted to update my progress. I've decided to go with the Ultra filter and Mobil Delvac MX 15W-40. I know this oil is CI-4+ rated and since the tractor doesn't have DPF or EGR and has flat tappet cam followers I think this oil should work good. I'll run it for a year and do a UOA and see how it works out. My son has started using it to cut his yard so the usage should double the number of hours. Maybe 50 hours a year now. I'm almost up to 100 hours so far in 2 1/2 years and plan to change the fuel and air filters when it reaches 100. Engine has a completely different sound on the MD MX.
