FRAM ULTRA (OCI question)

Today i changed my oil and filter, my filter choice was FRAM ultra. The box states that its good for 15 000 miles and i change my oil at the 5000 mile mark using conventional oil. WOuld it be wise not to change oil filter on my next oil change?

And this has my paranoid....the guy at the auto shop told me that this filter is for only synthetic oil not conventional....whats your views on this?

You can use the Fram Ultra with any oil, synthetic or otherwise

The guy at the auto shop does not know what he is talking about. You can change your filter at 5k, 10k or 15K, whatever lets you sleep at night. Since the filter is rated by the manufacturer for 15K, and common sense tells us that the filter becomes more efficient as it fills with trapped particles, there is no harm in running the filter out to the manufacturers rating of 15K.

And I'd like to know what kind of hobbits in the filter can differentiate between dino oil vs synthetic?

There are quite a few here that use the Ultra and do a filter change every other oil drain. The filter does not care what type of oil you use.

I still remember in the 80's doing this on some Toyota work trucks with an OEM Toyota filter (dino oil drained every 3000 miles with a filter change every 6000 miles. Those trucks were run hard and never had motor issues in the 200,000+ miles they were used. The trucks were trashed before the motors.

I do multiple OCIs with a Fram Ultra. It is fine to 15k on any oil. Some even use it up to 25k miles and claim good UOAs and the filter is in great shape.

I'd do at least 3 5000 mile OCIs for a total of 15k.

The fram ultra is a good oil filter i would use it for 2 5000 mile oil changes for 2 reasons first reason is you will save a couple of bucks second and most important reason is you avoid a dry start which you get for a second or two when you replace an oil filter. This filter is for any oil and will not know the difference...Its just marketing. Again those ultras are very well made with a synthetic media something the Napa Gold does not have although they too are built very well. What oil are you using and what engine?

In the 80's those Toyota trucks ran until the rust got them but they ran well all the time...Too bad Toyota does not build anything like that these days.

Well this change was done on my dad's car
10w30 conventional (cheapest store brand) and the FRAM ultra.

On my car i used 10w40 maxlife with a fram Extra Guard. (I also read some bad reviews on this filter too

)

What is the difference between syn oil and Conventional oil these days, especially as far as a filter is concerned.

Why not change the Fram Ultra filter every other oil change? That's what I'm doing now in my Infiniti, and I use a synthetic blend.

Is time bad for Ultra filters, or only miles? I put one on my 65 Mustang 6 cyl. last time I changed the oil, but that will be 2 years this fall. I will change the oil this fall as it will have about 2500 miles of purely summer long trip driving on it, but should I change the filter also, or leave it for another 2 years???

I've seen some filters with lower quality than the Ultra be on vehicles for 3+ years and they looked OK. I'd feel OK leaving an Ultra on for up to 3 years.

I use the Fram ultra for 2 oil changes per filter, 15k miles total. UOAs are great. These filters actually become more efficient after 5k miles.
