So FRAM tough guard #8316 looks to have same threads as #3614 that my 2011 Focus with the 2.0 takes. Would the slightly longer #8316 filter work ok? Just reading some older topics on this filter and it got me womdering

The 8316 I believe has 2 bypass valves in it
My understanding is that on the Focus using a longer filter makes it vulnerable to damage. Just use the standard size.
KD0AXS, you're right as the length is 4.05" vs the 3614's 3.34". Plus the I.d and o.d of the gasket diameter is smaller on the 8316

The 8316 is designed for the Mk1 Focus Zetec, with two ADBV's, on of them being backwards (the reverse valve keeps oil in for a better startup--the Zetec groans without it)
The 8316 also has a higher relief valve pressure setting than the 3614 and 3600.
In your case I'd rather use the XG3614 (ultra in the size spec'd for your car) rather than a longer filter. (Also, there is no XG8316)

Yes, the 3600 and 3614 are completely interchangeable as long as the extra length of the 3600 isn't a problem. I've interchanged them in several applications, including the Saturn in my signature.

Yeah, the 8316 is 1" + longer
Use the recommended filter so that you have a warranty from the filter manufacturer. You don't need a longer filter.
If there's an oil filter that can work on a real vehicle and a Jeep Liberty it must be a really good filter. (lol)
I would not worry about a warranty claim because of a longer filter unless it involved physical damage to the filter because it was exposed because of its size.
If you have ever been involved in the technical end of a warranty claim of which I've had the experience a few times over the past 20 years things like size and bypass settings are most likely not the defining cause. Abuse, weather, driving habits and other obvious causes are the places that lead to solutions to the problem. Most warranty claims are cut and dry. Easy to figure out.

He started the engine before he figured out that the replacement oil was still on the work bench, and this was after running the engine for about 10 minutes. The answer was nothing technical. Just a mistake. The oil filter was a longer one and no one even blinked at the substitution.

Ya know, the TG 8316 is a lil' less than 3/4" longer than a 3614 TG filter. I drive highway anyways and am a very cautious driver as havent ran over any debris in the road etc. I'll do a mockup on the Focus next OCI and decide
Just curious, is the oil filter on the newer Focus models (that call for the 3614-size filter) mounted vertically on the bottom?
Because I know that the older generation that called for the 3600 (SPI) or 8316 (Zetec) had the filter mounted horizontally, so it would never scrape or bottom out in a way that could damage the filter, so you could use the longest filter that has that thread and gasket diameter with no worries. Unfortunately, it also means getting oil all over the axles when you change it!

KCJEEP; on drama filter site they say the 8316 has a 14 psi vs 12 psi for the 3614 so
