mann 713/19 vs fram ph 8316

ok I have a 1986 vanagon, it takes a Mann W719/12 oil filter. I can no longer use that filter cause I added an oil cooler and sandwhich adaptor, so the stock filter is too long now to fit (hits the header pipe)

i looked up the filter specifications on the Mann website, the stock filter the vanagon uses has a 1 bar bypass pressure, and has an antidrain back valve.

i crossed referenced another Mann filter that has same specs, just in a shorter can. the correct one came up as W713/19.


I was not able to find that filter locally, so I bought a fram equivilant PH 8316 (supposed to be equivilent anyway) however I dont see ANY technical specs on the Fram webiste (it is very dumbed downed)

can anyone tell me where to find the spec on this fram filter?

I want to be assured this filter has the antidrainback feature and the 1 bar bypass valve.

also do you all know of other vendors that might have the Mann w713/19 or other equivelant filters?

note this fram filter (PH 8316) is cross referenced to fit the Jeep Liberty 2005-06 the Ford escape 2001-04 and the 91-96 Ford Escort

please let me know if this filter has the right bypass and drain back features to repalce the mann W719/12 filter I was using

It says that it has a bypass set to 14 psi. However, that's a pretty common filter size and most of us here would say try something like a Wix, a Purolator, or maybe a Motorcraft filter for better performance.

Hey, just for kicks I looked up the height of the Wix filter that was spec's for the vanagon and it was around 4.8", while the cross for the PH8316 is also 4.8", at least in Wix. The Fram is slightly shorter at around 4". Better check how much extra space you need and then check the heights carefully of any of these non-spec. filters.

I found some Supertech 8316s on clearance and used them as a long replacement for the 3416 on a Saturn. The ST (Champions at the time, I think) had an unusual double anti-drainback valve. A spring-loaded metal valve was visible in the center hole near the open end.

I can't say much about the measurements, but as a generalization, it seems like Frams are sometimes shorter than equivalent filters in other brands. 8316 STP (by Champion) and Fram might both be available at Autozone for a side-by-side comparison.

ok the framn is not rated hgihly here, the other brands listed are too tall to fit. the Mann W713/19 looks like will fit fine, does anyone know where to go about buying this filter? I live in califrornia.
