Wondering if fram's extend guard, or tough guards are any good? Ive done alot of reading here, and msot seem to say adn think, the extend guards are really good! Not all though. I read the oil filter study here, and the page listed the tough guard as being and excellent filter as well. I normally use pureolator pure one, and Mobil 1 filters for finer filtering. Was considering trying a K&N for the colder winter months. Whats everyone's fact, or opinion?

IMO the tough guard isn't any better then the cheapo fram, or any other filter for that matter. The extended guard still has the same ADBV design so I wouldn't recomend that either. There are tons of better filters for half the cost.

Unless you've found a "real deal" on the Frams, why not stay with what's giving you good service now?

Thanks for the input! The reason i wanted to run a K&N filter, is simply becuase, ive always wanted too, for years, and when my oil change cmae up, i always opted for something else, after seeeing the K&N sells for $10.00 bascialy. The box says it filters from 10-20 microns, and is supposed ot be of VERY full flow as well. I used to use frams allt he time when i was younger. It wasnt until i discovered this aweome board, a year or 2 ago, that it made me change my mind. But when you see frams line of stuff someimes, like the full synthetic , tough guard ect, maybe they made an improvemnt, so wanted to see what everyone else said. I remember reading a post here, i think it was from Wang, he did some kinda test of the extend guard, and his study, found it to be very good actually. SO was curious.

I run FRAM with no problems. I have one Tough Guard left to go on the Saturn, but after this, it's Purolator PP as I got 'em for $1.00/each. If I was able to obtain FRAM filters for the same price, you bet I'd be using them. It simply doesn't matter to me.
Extended guards are now $8.99 at Walmart (rollback).

The purolator premium plus flows even better then the K&N and is a fraction of the price. The K&N is probably one of the most overpriced filters for what you get(Extended guard might be close, but I wouldn't even consider it) it still has a nitrile ADBV and doesn't have the best filtering or flow. I'm not sure if Grease's oil filter study is still up, but it went into much greater detail then ANY filter study.

Yes. As long as it is kept in it's box and in the trunk, it will last 10K to 20K miles.

It all depends on how the 10k-20k is accumulated. If it's over 9-14 months ...probably. Over 2.5 years ...probably not.
