I may be wrong but this is what I think looking at this filter and the way the filter media was bent. There is very little gap between the filter element at the housing for the oil to flow freely. Especially when the oil is cold. So after each cold start the cardboard end plate (the one close to the ADBV) was bent by the oil flow. That side of the filter element looks uglier. The other side is OK.
 
The pleats look rough but that oil still looks very clean. Thanks for the C&P.
BTW car51, you seem to post a lot of C&P oil filters. Do you work around a mechanic shop, have people give them to you to do as you will, or, go pick them from a oil filter recycle center? Whichever it is, thanks for all of the C&P pics.

Blue: I work at a very large fleet service center. when I am doing oil changes (Somedays its a lot, Somedays not) I grab which filters I would like and that the BITOG community would like to see cut open.

Fram makes the ultra which is one of my favorites.. I hope they keep up the good work and keep the quality of the ultra. If the quality stays and the price does not change the ultra will survive and i for one will keep buying it.
