FRAM SynWash Long Life Air Filter

I dont see the problem with just popping a new one in for $10 every 15k miles. Isn't that easier? C'mon guys... wash the filter? It can't be as clean as brand new just by washing it! Sounds gross.

Gimmick Alert!

The filters for my car are usually $20-30

I like the gaskets on plain Fram filters. The compreeeable foam installs much easier and seals better than others. Many of my filter installs are difficult apps and the Fram makes it a lot easier. I'm interested in the Synwash, but also like disposable since I run them 30k and don't. I don't really want to add the step of cleaning to the process either. I will look at the price/performance. If they are 2x the price as regulars, I'd buy one, 3x = no.

btw- I think the best time to clean/change a filter is after the road salt has washed away in spring. I dunno about capacities, but yearly or bi-anual seems ideal.

What is an average price for these things? I understand it will vary by application, but if I can buy a standard orange box Fram air filter at Wal-Mart for $12, what can I expect to pay for this newfangled thing? (a previous poster had an interesting name the "HOGWASH") LOL

One small note on dishwashing liquids. One tech who services (and cleans) our scanning electron microscopes mentioned Joy dishwashing liquid rinses (spectrographically) cleanly. From other labs I've learned that Dawn cuts grease the best, but for this application Joy would be the detergent of choice.

I too am tickled that coolhand01 would appeal directly to us as jury for their new product. In principle I like the concept of a washable air filter. I'll wait and see what the jury has to say about the technical, economic, and practical aspects of this product before buying into it.

I've never let Fram's reputation on oil filters sway me from using their other filter products.

I saw these at a Meijer the other day, and the prices were as follows:

Extra Guard (standard) #CA3660 $5.99

Tough Guard #TGA3660 $9.99

SynWash #LLA3660 $18.99

Remember, AAP has air filters on sale this month for 25% off, and AZ has the free Prestone Fuel additive with the purchase of a Fram air filter for which you can get a rebate of $3.00 if you piggyback that with the $6.00 Tough Guard rebate you use along with the $17.99 Valvoline SynPower/Fram Tough Guard oil filter deal.

In other words, 5 qts. of SynPower, a Tough Guard oil filter, an air filter (let's say Extra Guard) and your choice of one Prestone Fuel additive for...drum roll, please...$14.98 plus tax. > $17.99 - $6.00 + $5.99 - $3.00

For what it's worth:

Fram DOES NOT make the filter media, they merely buy it in big rolls.

Fram DOES form the gasket that encapsulates the pleated filter media.

The lint filters in my washer/dryer make me fear anything washable.

But, I tend to change my air filters every year. This Fram washable airfilter, even if it only survives a dozen washes, might be worth it for me as long as it filters as well as OEM.

This is just another attempt to keep unrecycleable junk out of our landfills, and while I do respect the attempt, it's going to have to be a viable replacement to the ease and convenience of the regular filter. I can't say I'm hip to the idea of waiting a day for my air filter to dry out before I can put it back in. Would a blast of compressed air sent backwards through the filter be an effective cleaning method?

It rains often enough. I don't understand why it needs complete drying. Sure, I won't just reinstall it and run a cross country road trip. But, I see no reason why I could't just wash it in the evening, reinstall it, and forget about it for the next morning drive to work.

I just bought 2 of the SynWash filters for the family vehicles. I'm impressed. For about $21 I get a filter that's reusable, with no required oiling or potential MAF contamination.

These look to be bargains compared to K&Ns or throwaways.....

I've run my new Syn-Wash filter for a couple days now, and am impressed with it's quicker throttle response. The 'seat-of-the-pants' feeling is much better compared to the old paper element. (The paper element was of unknown age, however, and was grey on the intake side, not clogged by any means, just a little dirty.....)

I'll have to say that engine performance is at least as good as with a new paper filter, and probably a little better. Just hoping that the filtering ability of the SynWash is good.

Since the media is synthetic, maybe it creates a static charge as air flows through, to attract dirt...?

I just picked one of these up. Great build quality. But... the thing is almost 1/4" too long on the gasket compared to the napa gold that first perfectly into the air box on my Mazda Tribute. I couldn't even begin to get it to fit correctly

I have been eyeballing the SynWash @ Walmart for several months. It looks like a very well made product. The only concern I have is that some fibers from the synthetic media may come off and get sucked into the engine.

For those of you who have these filter can you check the screen in front of the Mass Air Flow sensor for filter fibers?

I have seen what synthetic media (scotch bright) can do to the inside of a motor and it's not good. I know the Synwash is different then scotch bright, but any synthetic media scrathes more then natural fibers, and I'm a little concerned about fibers coming off the filter surface
