This filter came off my old work truck. A 98 GMC 2500 with a 5.7L V8. It had barely 3000 miles on it. The oil was Mobil super 1000. I was driving up a steep hill when suddenly the engine lost power rapidly and the temperature gauge shot up while the oil pressure dropped to zero. I had no safe place to stop for a few hundred feet. It stalled just as I got a spot to stop. My bet would be on oil pump failure and then the engine just shredded itself. Look at all the metal shavings that came out of the filter. The filter held up better than the engine. Date code: C10743

Here are the drain pan photos. No I wasn't panning for gold.

Never heard of Mobil super 1000? I see its available in Australia. I take it you can get in Canada as well?

Its the cheapest Mobil oil you can get in Canada. I don't buy it personally because the jugs are always an odd size at 4.4L vs the usual 4.73L or 5L.

Same as MS5K in the states.

Filter looks...? I don't know what to say...

Houston we have a problem.. major terminal malfunction.

Yeah I agree that the filter held FAR better than the motor here. Holy cow. My lady had the oil pump go out on her VW Jetta. To make a long story short after she called me and when I went outside I saw a splatter of oil where the car was in the parking lot. The trail went from there for a half a mile. Car empty of oil and ran for another 5 miles. Motor was done obviously. It all worked out in the long run basically. We got her grandmother's car a 98 Camry with only 67k miles on it and perfectly maintained.
The Fram extra guard filters have been looking really good for awhile now.. good job with the cut and post.

If the oil pump broke, dropped a shaft or something, that oil and debris would not be in the filter. Need to look further when you tear it apart. I suspect something else entirely like a jumped timing chain, spun bearing, or a lost cam ...

Will it turn over at all now?

C - factory (not sure where C is, maybe it's Albion, IL) I know that A means Greenville,OH
1 - 2011
074 - March 15 (the 074th day of the year)
3 - third shift

More likely the engine spun a bearing. Unfortunately common on the Vortec 4.3/5.0/5.7 if they've ever suffered coolant ingestion in their life due to faulty intake gaskets. I've probably rebuilt a couple dozen that suffered similar fates. Although I'm happy to report every one I know of that I rebuilt is still running. The highest mileage one is in my friend's truck with 205,000 ish miles on the rebuild. Bummer, sorry about your luck. If it's any consolation it was already junk when it lost power.
