Fram or Mobil 1 or Honda Filter

I have a 2017 Honda Accord due for an oil change. I was debating on using a fram extra guard. Mobil 1 oil filter or a factory Honda one. Is the fram just has good has the other 3. I read somewhere that fram makes the Honda one.

Honeywell is the parent company of Fram, who also makes the Honda oil filter. So yes, there are many similarities. The Honda filter is a solid choice but it only filters 66% (or there about) at 20 microns. The Mobil 1 filter has much better efficiency but is overpriced IMO. Honda recommends changing your oil filter every OTHER oil change, which brings me to the recommendation of the Fram Ultra. It has synthetic wire backed media that filters 99% at 20 microns and flows better than the Mobil 1 and possibly the Honda OEM filter as well. All are solid choices but the Fram Ultra is in my opinion the best choice of all. I know you didn't mention the Ultra in your post but it is far superior to the Extra Guard and a MUCH better value.

Check out the Fram HM on clearance at WM. IMO....just like the extra guard but with the HM additive in the can. I've been running these for 8K mile OCI's with a Filter Mag and have been doing a great job on keeping my oil clean.

I use the Fram Ultra and it will go for two oil changes. But you won't go wrong with any of the three you mention. I get the Ultra through Amazon subscribe and save and wait until Fram puts out their rebate on filters. They end up being pretty cheap. Honda filters are overpriced for what you get. And presently at Walmart the Mobil 1 filter is a dollar higher than the Ultra.

ive been using both with no issues. this has been an ongoing debate for awhile now. there are a lot of different opinions on here. some saying the reason the Honda only is about 65-66% efficient is because they are more concerned about "flow" which is understandable. some say it does flow better then the fram ultras but i see both filters flowing enough and not much to worr about in the end. and yes the A01 oil filter is def a better construction filter etc over the A02 but not matter what filter you pick to run, the car will go well over 150k miles in its lifetime so its all about choice.

yes the fram ultra is a excellent filter and is good for up to 15k miles, which does mean you dont "have" to change it every oil change you can just drain the oil and fill it and be on your way. but for a few bucks extra and to have a little peace of mind, just change the filter every oil change if you are that concerned with it.

so my opinion is no matter what filter you run, they will all work fine. just change it out every oil change. i do mine every 5k miles with synthetic, but to each their own.

Can you link where Honda publishes the filtration data for their filters?

I definitely would use a Honda filter for the first several changes so that in the event there is an engine issue, there will be one less thing to be blamed. Ed

It actually doesn't matter, as long as the filter doesn't fail.

Honda would have to PROVE filter failure before denying warranty.

I will be running an XG8A (about three times bigger than factory!) on a remote mount for 24,000 miles (3x 8K OCI's)

The 15400-PLM-A01 Honda filter is a good design. That is what the factory put on our Honda (not the 15400-PLM-A02 which is the one made by Fram) and I have been using them ever since. I purchased my last batch of 5 for $30 six months age delivered to my door.

I'll second the A01, use them on my '05 (got a six pack from H and A parts). The thing I like is how thick the can feels on these, pulling them with my filter wrench and I don't even make a dent, whereas when I tried and Ultra (or any other brand) they folded up easily with only a little pressure. Probably doesn't matter really, but on my particular Accord the filter hangs low sort of behind the passanger tire and is always covered in road grime at the end of an OCI.

I think the Honda OEM filters aren't very efficient because Honda wants you to run them for 2 OCIs based on the OLM, which means a filter could be used for 15~20K miles. That's a lot to ask for with a non full synthetic oil filter. They know the filter delta-p could increase over the use period, so they make it inefficient to handle the debris loading over 2 OCIs without the risk of early bypass operation.

Honda will never publish that data. You know where that number came from, right?

I probably wouldn’t run an extra guard (orange can) at least until they roll them out with silicone ADBV. Ultra or Tough Guard are fine, A01 and A02 are fine, Mobil 1 is fine too at least for now, but not for more money than an Ultra.

The A02’s are now made in the USA, the Honeywell A02 was made in Canada at a now closed plant.

There are MANY of these filters here cut open...
