Dry rot from age perhaps? Doubt a new one would do the same.

Yeah and that was the heavily oiled end with the staining.. my thoughts anyway. Or maybe just a layered cut on the outside edge...that's enough to start it.

I think the ST is a better filter for less money

This recent post by @Bellavita shows the ST and Orange can being pretty much the same. Possibly the fram has different media.

No it was more robust. I tore it off but it didn't flake from the get go.
