Why shop at Wal-mart for filters anyways? Are the Motorcraft cheaper at Wal-mart?

*shrug* In a perfect world I could get everything I need at the lowest price at my locally owned corner store.

Here is a pic of a Tough Guard, it is a different part number but it gives an idea.

Canadian Tire used to sell re-badged TG's as Motomaster 'Formula 1' filters, a step above their basic ones. I found the 'last' one of these in my car's size a couple of years ago for only $1.25, and I have it on my car now. Doesn't look like too bad of a filter...

Now, at CT, if you want to go above a Fram, you have to get a Quaker State filter for $6.99....but it's still a better deal than Fram TG's, which you can now get at Walmart for $7.80-ish...

If that 2.88 is to buy an AAP Total Grip I say

Love the hand tighten grip, and better made than more expensive FRAM.

However, for a Ford like my son's Explorer I'd have to spend about 75-80 cents more at Wally and go with the Motorcraft. Silcon ADBV, and base end bypass valve that Ford recommends.*

Thanks for posting the great pics of the cut open Fram. Gotta learn that posting skill some day.

Exactly what I was refering to, can't beat the AAP Total Grips! But you are also right about the Motorcrafts, which are less than a buck more at AAP!

The photo showing the inlet holes exposed under/beside the ADBV illustrate what I consider a significant drawback to most of the Fram oil filters. The flimsy cardboard tips of the filter media element are the only thing centering the ADBV at the inlet end. If the cardboard tips are bent, the media element and ADBV can end up crooked in the can and the ADBV will leak (the inlet holes won't be fully covered, as shown in the photo).

The above is true with all the Fram oil filters except for the Extended Guard and Synthetic (Canada). On those filters the media endcap are steel and the tips won't easily bend or fold.

Ecore filters like some of the SuperTechs have an endcap/ADBV design that is similar, but somewhat better than, the cheaper Frams. IMHO, if you want to save money by using low cost oil filters, a Purolator or Motorcraft is much preferred over a cheap Fram or Ecore Supertech.

Why is a base end bypass valve better or not??? I use the Motorcraft 400S on my Tacoma.

Front (base) end bypass:

Advantage: Bypassing oil does not pass by/over the dirty side of the media (therefore there is less chance of re-introducing dirt back into oil).

Disadvantages: Costs more. Generally takes up more space inside the can (leaving less room for filter media).

I didn't know AAP carried the Motorcrafts, I've honestly only looked for AAP TG, PP+ and Pure One there. No objection to getting the Motorcraft there. Still have some $$$ left from an AAP Christmas gift card. That's after picking up 3 Total Grips.

Thanks for the tip!!!!

The picture says it all. Built and operated on the ragged edge of mechanical failure. No thanks.

I cannot understand why ANYONE wouldn't be willing to shell out another 3 bucks and buy something decent. Amazing....

I pay the $3.53 for the MotorCraft at ""Mart. It's in my Tacoma right now, along with 6 quarts of Motorcraft 5w30. The truck likes the combo.

I only bought filters at wmart when they had AC Delco. I get my filters at Advance and Murray's (Purolator, AC). On the rare occasion I sometimes get them at Napa.

That filter looks like junk. This is the 4th or 5th fram I've seen cut open and I wouldn't put one on my car.

"""I wouldn't use a spin on Fram if it was free. Seriously, I'd spend $2.88 and get a real filter even for a beater."""

SHEEP-SHEEP SHEEP I TELL YA-THEY ARE ALL SHEEP.
Anyone else jumping on the FRAM bashing train, cause it's leaving the station
