Hi all. Here we have a 2004 Subaru Forester with 229,232 miles, last change done at Walmart, using a Fram Core 6607 and Quaker State 5W-30 synthetic blend 5000 miles ago. Replaced with a Fram Tough Guard 6607 and Supertech 5W-30 synthetic blend. Can opened with a hacksaw. There was some debris in the oil filter that I couldn't identify, but we've had some work done on the valve covers recently. Maybe that's what the cause is. Looks pretty clean otherwise. Messy glue on the one side but it feels hard and does not flake away on my fingernail. ADBV was still flexible and had no cuts or breaks in it.

Isn't a Subaru spec'd for a 7317 oil filter? If I'm correct than they went with the 'undersized' filter (which probably doesn't matter and is done to keep inventory down).

I like, it looks solid I have a case of these from my previous Nissan and will use them on the new Mazda 3.

That's correct, that's just oil reflecting light. I could not find any tears in the pleats. The bypass valve has the usual ruffles in it of course.

Guessing that's oil in the pleat opening in pic #7? It held up OK, considering that 12/9/2025 was close to the end of the line for Champion Labs, barring their reincarnation by PGI.

Champion Labs built - not long before they were shut down. Lots of black glue slop on the end cap, but maybe it doesn't shed like Motorcrafts do if you couldn't make is come off with a fingernail. Leaf spring is ruffled pretty good on one side. Otherwise did its job.

7317 is the Honda size
It seems that 7317 is the filter Fram spec'd for later Foresters on the Rockauto site but in 2004 the 6607 was the spec'd filter for Foresters. IMO, if you have the room (which you do with the top mounted filter location on Subaru's) there is no reason not to use the 7317 although either would work.

This model has the filter on the bottom, just forward of the drain plug in the oil pan. The bottom of the oil pan is about 2 inches lower than the bottom of the oil filter, so I believe a 7317 would fit, since the 7317 is supposedly only about 3/4" taller than the 6607. I don't think I'd want to have the filter stick down any lower than that though.
Here's a YouTube video of an identical model getting the oil and filter changed.

Now I see why they spec. the 6607 on those earlier Foresters.
I use the 3600 size filter on my Escape's 2.5 Duratec (oversize for the spec'd 3614) because it doesn't hang below the oilpan. On my Focus with the 2.0 Duratec I stick with the 3614 because the 3600 would hang below the oilpan slightly.
