Out of boredom at work, I got an email from Honeywell (since we sell autolite plugs and bendix pads) about their fram challenge.
AFter the 3rd module, I'll get a certification! oh yay for me!

I'm on the 2nd module, ANYBODY can sign up for this.
They have some very interesting tests that they perform, and have even claimed the cardboard backing plate is strong.
If anything, it's interesting about what they "think" is great vs. what's really being sold in the world.

They are using he OCOD, so far ph8a's and ph3600's for the testing so far.
Some of it looks like [censored] but they are using the actual guts from the OCOD.

Aside from the paranoia about the fiber end cap, there's nothing wrong with Fram's orange filter.

It's the VALUE that gets peoples undies in a wad. You can get a better and better constructed filter for the same or lesser price.
The OCOD is the cheapest possible build (Fram has a cheaper filter available but no one has cut one open yet AFAIK).

Are you talking about the Honeywell Defense? I cut one open....the same inside. Just white and blue with no grip texturing.

I think the Fram challenge is to make the most money possible on every filter and still have it be a filter that wont blow up most engines. The product is just a great case of marketing and how that can make one company buckets of money.

I will stick with my non E core Delcos and Bosch filters.

Yes, Honeywell Defense was the filter I was thinking of but couldn't recall the name. Not that I paid much attention to them to begin with.
The Fleet/Farm chain doesn't even list them on their web site.

Less media perhaps?

Hard to imagine how they could cheapen the OCOD any more than they do now.

Sounds like an oxymoron to me, after all, its the cardboard end caps that align the ADBV to the can for sealing...

Based on the title I thought this was referring to how they could charge even more for the already overpriced orange can.

I see they are still under the Honeywell banner. Should be changing over to the new owner, 'Rank' Group fairly soon. A very fitting owner name for the orange can. I'm not a Fram hater though, just purchased two Fram air filters.

Interesting that they call the "Extended" (not Xtended) Guard only a 10K filter, not the 15K that the new box states. I do need to try cutting open one of my brother's Altima OCODs that he runs for 7K to see if it is handling the longer than recommended runs he is doing (he's buying them himself and I'm installing them, usually using Synpower or whatever syn I have laying around). Honestly if they had rebates & deals to get them as cheap as the Purolators I wouldn't have any qualms about running them for SHORT OCIs.

I have no problems with fram filters. I've seen some ugly ones, and I've seen some good ones cut open... like every brand. They just need to price themselves better to get our attention.

Videos are good IMO. Would go a long way on educating some newbs

If you want a cheaper Fram priced more accordingly to what they are, you can always buy the O Reilly housebrand Microgard ones. They are basically a Honeywell Defense made in Canada.

Ive seen two Fram issues. One killed a moto engine (Kawasaki 750 with 5k miles on it) and the other orange can nearly killed a 440 mopar. Slapped a Wix on it, and the oil pressure gauge came back alive. I think they are fine for non performance engines, but just barely.

how many shops and dealerships use honeywell filters??? Let alone, FRAM branded filters?

Every shop I worked at used either ecores, napa, or purolators.

Our ship used Carquest filters (wix) for years. When carquest went out of business in my hometown, our shop went to AC Delco's and Oreilly Microgard until they went to Fram/Honeywell to make em.
