For the Expedition at least!

The AFE 0w30 is the best running oil I've had in the truck. Period. And comically, the only 30-weight.

The list of oils used has been:

1. Mobil 1 5w20
2. Mobil 1 TDT 5w40
3. Delvac 1 5w40
4. Mobil 1 0w40
5. Petro-Canada Duron-E 0w40

Observations:

The engine felt the same (for the most part) on all of the above oils. Best cold-start performance was a tie between the M1 0w40 and PC 0w40..... They "felt" about the same on start-up. I can't comment on how PC 0w40 would be on REALLY cold starts; since I haven't run it in the winter, but there was a HUGE difference between D1 5w40 and M1 0w40 last winter.

Noisiest? M1 5w20, and whatever 5w20 was in it when we bought it.

Quietest? Delvac 1 5w40, though really all of the 40-weights were pretty close in this department.

The AFE 0w30 is just as quiet as the 40-weights, but the engine feels more "free" than it has felt on ANY weight of oil, including 5w20. This is especially noticeable north of 3,000RPM.

Sort of strange, as really, for the most part, the engine has been very "numb" to the grade of oil that has been in it for anything other than cold winter starts. This is the first oil that I can actually really FEEL the difference, sort of weirding me out actually! LOL

Hopefully Exxon/Mobil doesn't yank the carpet out from under you and stop selling it/simplify their product line.

It happens.

I got 2 cases of Phillips66 Trop-Arctic semi-syn for super cheap. Found that I really liked it and was willing to stick with it even if it was more than $1.79 a quart, but now I can't find it anywhere.

This makes sense as the HTHS for this M1 is of course significantly less than your immediately preceeding oil i.e. PC 0W40. You have gone from an oil with an HTHS of over 4
shocked2.gif
to one that is a touch under 3! A greater than 1.0 cP drop in HTHS is a lot i.e. may well be noticeable by your butt dyno.

(FWIW I noticed the change going from XD 0W30 to this M1 0W30)

I don't think that will happen with M1 0-30. I believe their 0-30 wt. oils are pretty big sellers from what I hear at WM from their oil change guy I talked to and the way it sells off the shelf.

That makes sense.

BTW,

the MRV of M1 0w40:

MRV at -40ºC, cP (ASTM D4684) 31,000

VS

the MRV of M1 0w30:

MRV @ -40 ºC (ASTM D4684) 17,100

I think I'm going to notice a difference this winter

Overk1ll,
Would like to see you get your moneys worth from M1 oils by doing 10K mile OCIs. I did that with my 4.6 Merc GM with great sucess at 218K. Engine was very clean through the oil fill hole and ran great .

For that matter I have done 10K mile OCIs with every engine I have owned for the last 300 years. Well it seems that long.

M1 0W30 is working well in my Buick 3.1L pushrod engine with 87K miles on it . Start up is great , runs free and no oil usage . I plan to run a 5K OCI and then test .Previously ran Valvoline conventional 5W30 with 4K OCI's and engine was very clean .

HAHAHAHAHHAHA

I've typically done 12K OCI's with M1 in the past. Which would be 7,500 miles.

I know a lot of people doing 10K miles and more with M1 with never a problem. Several have very high miles on their engines. Then I guess you knew that. Ha! Ha!

Yessir. The recent run of PC 0w40 was the first oil I've used other than M1 in my own vehicles in something like almost 15 years.

I look forward to seeing this UOA of the PC 0W40. I dont recall ever seeing a UOA of this DURON oil

Indeed, neither do I. I think Jon will be posting a run of their 5w40 in his Powerstroke. Will be interesting to see how it looks compared to his previous Delvac 1 run, since there was a fair bit of shear there.

I do 7-9k easily and don't look back....

On my GS400 I switched from 0W-30 AFE to 5W-30 EP and the EP IMO seemed a lot smoother. The AFE was run a little more than 5,000 miles. I also did the same oil switch on my Grand Caravan but didn't really notice much of a difference there. I guess every car is different.

GC ( 0W-30 ) makes our 2001 Impala 3.4 engine with 62K miles on it run quiet compared to M1 5W-30 EP 5000 with 3 to 4 K OCI that I ran it it since we got it 30K miles ago. It is actually a noticeable drop in noise coming from the engine. The engine runs smooth and has plenty of pep, sometimes it seams like it wants to climb the windy hills like a small sports car. Planing on 8K OCI for first OC with GC.

Hate to spoil your party, O-K, but they don't sell this oil in Canada - good luck getting a regular supply of it!

I was hoping you'd stick with the PC oil, but hey, you gotta do what works!

What are you doing with all the PC 0W-40 you bought?

The 0w-30 M1 is a really nice oil. It's a lightweight 30 grade, but meets the GM 4718M spec so you know you're getting a very good oil.

Also, the density is now up on all M1 grades including the 5w20 so I would expect the apparent noise you were getting from the 20 grade to be less noticeable.

So is it time for to try the new .86 density M1 vs. the old .80 density? I'm thinkin' about it.
