No such thing as a perfectly clean engine- especially one that's been recently assembled. I'd be glad the metal is out of there... and certainly wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Never have I seen the metal flake phenomena,

It is because you haven't looked closely. Seriously. I've NEVER done an oil change where the oil was 100% devoid of sparkly metalic-appearing particles. Even in darkened oil, these particles ALWAYS show up in the last few ounces of the catch pan, clearly visualized as I am pouring the used oil into the recycling container. It's been this way for over 40 years of oil changes that I have personally done. Sure, the newer vehicles have less, but, I repeat, I have NEVER seen an oil change completely devoid of these particles. I've only had perhaps 5-6 oil changes done in all those years that I didn't perform myself ("free oil changes from the dealer), and I've ALWAYS observed the last drops for these particles. The vehicle list includes a 1954 Ford F-100, about 20 motorcycles and about as many cars, and includes a 2007 Subaru.

To me, it's a foregone conclusion, not unlike the sun appearing in the eastern horizon every morning (assuming we aren't too far north or south, and assuming we are on Earth).

Very common indeed! Most do not know this happens and go on, fat, dumb and happy.

That's what you get for buying a Mazda...I owned 1 over 10 years ago and traded it on after the engine was rebuilt TWICE in 23,000 miles and NO those cheap idiots at Mazda wouldn't even admit the engine was a POS.

Better trade it in tomorrow.............
