I'm beside myself with this nonsense. I'm not a big formal discipline boss when many things can be addressed on a personal level. If one of my members refused that gun, that would be a formal rip and recommendation for command discipline above the basic, you screwed up, and you're accountable.

If the cops won't take it, what the heXX are YOU supposed to do with it? Not to mention in likely all 50 states (definitely in NY), despite the circumstances, you Sir, are in possession of a handgun. That could lead to you being arrested for that possession. I can't speak to your area in GA. I created a form (ya, more red tape) for my dept. Simple, you walk in and surrender the weapon. Sign if you want it destroyed or if you'd like us to keep it and in a year, if unclaimed, it becomes your property.

Additionally, that gun should have had a G-Gun report run through E-Justice to make sure it wasn't stolen. Not required but it should also be sent to ballistics for analysis. Sounds like too much, but I've personally been a part of a gun coming back with multiple bodies on it. Certain things have the potential to be so serious you dot the "i" and cross the "t."
Exactly here in Georgia. Nobody seems to care.

Gee, Its not a bomb, its a gun that the person that had work done and used that car as a loner prior I'm sure simply forgot to take his gun with him. State gun laws are different but I would think the dealer would have a record who used that car prior, the Service manager needed to call that person and tell him he has his gun, come get it...

States vary in wild ways. In NJ, possession of hollow point ammunition outside your home or at the range or on the way to the range or gun store will get you certain jail time. I’d bet that self defense gun is loaded with hollows. In NJ, I’d park it in the street, lock it, and go to the police station and give them the keys and walk away. Tell the dealer where the car is and who has the keys.
Having possession of hollow point ammo is treated the same in NJ as having possession of a pistol and only allowed traveling to or from a range or in your house. If you buy a new house in NJ, there is no way to legally transport your firearms from your old house in NJ to the new house in NJ unless you stop at a range first. Unless they've fixed that problem or the AG sent a memo to tell the police to not worry about that. There is also the issue that former law enforcement often carry hollow points in their carry permit pistols.

Agree. These days people freak out.

Don't tell anyone, but back in my high school days, we had gun racks in our trucks. With deer rifles (30-06), ready to go. Sitting in the school parking lots.......this was not unusual at all back in the early 80's.
In my day I took guns to school for show and tell...many, many, times.
I'd leave them at the principals office and retrieve them afterwards.

Can you imagine doing this today?

That’s what I’m going to end up doing none of the police stations wanted to take responsibility which that really blows my mind and they’re trying to get firearms off the streets and nobody seems to care
This gun wasn't on the streets, it was in the glove box. ;)

Seriously, best advice given here is to drive the car back to where you got it, drop it off and tell them why. It's their problem, not yours.

Exactly.. it was found in a glovebox of a rental where it's reasonable to believe the previous renter forgot about it.. no wonder the police aren't particularly motivated. Some here acting like they stumbled upon a crime scene.

If that happened in IL and you didn't have a concealed carry permit, you would be arrested. The cop would let the court figure it out. If you can prove that your spouse has a permit and left the gun in the car, they would likely let it go, but don't have to.

But I imagine if you go back before my time many states didn't allow concealed carry and handguns were a different animal. Even Texas would throw you in jail 50 years ago if you were pulled over and a cop spotted a gun in your glove box during a traffic stop.

Not a big deal IMO. Back in the late 1970s about 1/4 of the student parking lot at my high school probably had a gun in their unlocked vehicles during hunting season.

That’s what end up happening they called the previous person who had the rental

Some of us have different experiences with gear adrift. When I was just a e1, I forgot about my rifle leaning against my pack and a cpl found it........That was the first and last time I made that mistake.

But OP's case worked out in the best way possible.
