Definitely now what I was expecting. I was strolling through a forest within one of the suburbs and noticed an engine block just sitting there. It has some ends caps, not no other parts looks like it has been there a while. I could not find any identifying marks on it.
What could it be?

Iron Duke, wasn't that cam in block? That pic looks like an OHC to me--don't see holes for pushrods through the deck, don't see an area for camshaft. I'm leaning Ford but there was lots of iron block I4's over the years.

Nice, with a little work could be a non movable hassock.

By the way nice looking bike.

Car rusted out around it....only the block remains

If that's the spin-on oil filter location in the third picture, that could easily be a Jeep 2.5....except for the overhead cams, that is....and the thought that it's been there a very long time.

I found an old wood fired boiler and steam driven pump deep in the woods. The brick lined steel pit had a massive tree growing through the middle. Unfortunately this predated always having an iPhone on me …

Pictures sometimes lie when it comes to scale, but I think you guys are barking up the wrong tree with the automotive suggestions.

This thing is beef. Miles of distance between cylinders, thick THICK block casting with heavy webs along the mains, bearing caps look like they weigh 5 pounds a piece, massive bearing journals...I'm gonna guess it's agricultural/industrial. Could be an old in-frame tractor engine.

Call me crazy, but wouldn't that 1.6 in big raised letters on the side seem to indicate it's a 1.6 liter engine? Maybe I'm wrong here, but it seems like a starting point.

What's the bore diameter? That would be a helpful clue. (I used to memorize bores and strokes of nearly every automotive engine for sale in the US, but might not remember this one.)

"Strolling," huh? Nice stroller!

Yup - Ford E3EE (multiple sub-codes), 98CID (1.6L) L4 engine..

Heck, they even made a diesel variant..

Ford "CVH" engine - Compound valve angle Hemispherical combustion chamber
Built from 1980-2004 in 1.1 to 2.0 liter displacements.

Based on the clues others have deduced, it's a 1983 1.6L CVH from an Escort or similar.
