That does make sense actually though I have no idea if it is true or not. An auto company would want as many CAFE credits as possible to offset CAFE penalties on all of their other brands that get less than 27.5 MPG.

It is recommended for the car so use it. If you are smarter than the oil co's and automakers then don't.
I take exception to the statement that the real experts on this site support the 5W-20 recommendation. I see many "experts" on this site who do NOT support that recommendation.
As far as trusting the oil and motor vehicle companies because they're smarter than us, how many times does their deception have to be documented in the news media before people start to give some thought to the veracity of their statements?
As an after thought, Ford has put what's known as the "Vulcan" 3.0 liter V6 in its Ranger pickup since about the mid-80's. I'm on 3 Ranger owners' forums. This engine is universally known to be a bulletproof, highly reliable engine and many Ranger owners with this engine have 200,000 or more miles on it, some with a lot more miles than that. And for many if not most of them that's mileage with the 30 weight oils that the engine was speced for until 2001, when Ford back-speced it for 5W-20. So don't tell me that the 5W-20 is better for the engine and that a 30 weight won't do as good a job.
Also, if it is true, it would make perfect sense from the manufacturers' perspectives to use the lightest oil possible that is easy for the public to get (5W-20) in order to cut CAFE penalties and also rack up CAFE credits.
Must you always act like a BLEEP? I have an honest question above and am looking for an honest answer. Instead you post that garbage which is funny as you were wanting facts and discussion earlier in this thread. Drink some more Kool-Aid with the rest of the Kool-Aid drinkers and play with matches.
Big Jim: Yes it has. I would like the questions I asked above answered in posts 200, 201, and 202 though by someone who actually knows the answer before the thread is locked down.
It only takes a couple of Meatheads to ruin a perfectly good thread. The same topic will come up again and again until an answer is reached.
And strangely I thought that forums such as this one were to have questions answered by knowledgeable people and misinformation politely corrected if proven to be actually false.
