Ford quality chief retires as CEO tries to boost reliability, reduce recalls

Farley came from Toyota, and helped build the Lexus brand into what it is.

He should know what quality looks and smells like.

The question is whether he can change the leopard's spots.

Then he should definitely be able to crib some more people from Toyota :)

Load up the board with people coming from Honda and Toyota, so that quality can finally be job 1 :D

Full disclosure, I think everyone here knows what I do for a living. That being said the quality has gone downhill like crazy. Some of the repairs we are having to do on vehicles due to either not being built correctly, or just poor parts is embarrassing. Plus the parts backorder situation is obscene. Numerous parts on backorder that have no business ever being more than overnight availability.
One of the most informative posts I have ever read. Kudos Mr. @bdcardinal.

All the big guys have work to do. Even the mighty Toyota is struggling financially. Long term debt is off the charts; far higher than their competition. Q2 revenue was up 22% YOY but net income was down 18% YOY. Everyone is struggling with their supply chain. They forecast next qtr to be worse from a net income standpoint.
Toyota's biggest seller, the Corolla, is a low margin vehicle and at least 1/3 of them are made by BYD.
Their investment in hydrogen cars is hardly paying off...

The last FORD products I got rid of were 2009 & 2012.

The first words of my comment should have been what I was thinking:
"sad times, because I can remember when I would have put my FORD trucks up against any other brand as I had such good performance out of every one I owned or used on the jobs." I enjoyed owning the FORDs I had because of how well made (especially interior + paint) they were compared to other brands I had owned. I also did not find myself doing much of any repair work on any of them compared to my other brand trucks.

Is it bad engineering of products or poor performace in manufacturing? What else can cause recalls or breakdowns besides maybe they are using poor parts manufacturing companies they have not used in the past?

Its a lot of stupid things. There is one on 22MY F-150s and Super Dutys for badges. Apparently a run of the trucks shipped without the fender badges. We can't order them, we have to wait for them to be shipped by VIN. Other dealers received them and they were misboxed. Ford told them that they need to figure it out.

I had a 6.7 turbo on backorder for a large fleet. I just got it in today after a month. In that time I received 7 calls from Ford customer service demanding to know why I hadn't received the part yet and for me to open a help ticket. They got really upset when I gave them the help ticket number from the day after the part was ordered to which I was told there was nothing they could do but wait for the part.

I love Ford, I really do. I love my Fords. But it is really getting hard to put on the shirt everyday and come to work to get yelled at for things outside of my control.

It's unfair on good dealer staff like yourself

But my experience this afternoon with my local Ford dealer, Ford customer service, and NHTSA have lead me to believe the culture change needs to come from up top

Or the complaints, low satisfaction, and warranty costs are gonna bury them 😒

Cue the Ford bashing.
Unfortunately, much of it is well deserved.
I really hate it. I've literally owned nothing but Fords, but I don't trust the company as it is now. Sure, the quality was never perfect, but I drove a 25 year old Ford to work today. If I find myself in a situation where a 25 year old SUV that gets 16 MPG isn't going to work, the replacement likely won't be a Ford.

A key issue is the supply chain and Ford is in the same boat as everyone else.
I just called local Toyota dealership parts department and asked for Corolla CVT FE fluid. It comes in a 4L metal container and is stupid expensive at like $130. Parts guy said all fluids are on backorder and lead time is 2 to 3 weeks, or longer.

My friend's 2014 Corolla is gonna get Lubegard Universal CVT fluid, 5 qt jug, $60 delivered from Amazon.

I have hated Kia since about March 2021 when they went into their meltdown, but this makes Kia sound not as bad. I still hate Kia, it gets in the way of me selling GM parts. I used to think GM was bad during the strikes, but I've learned to live with GM's level of bad. The parts industry has soured for me so much. Like the stuff that happens now makes less sense than when one of our drivers set a load of parts on fire by throwing a cigarette into the bed of the truck several years ago. I am now nostalgic for the cigarette in the bed of the truck days.

Its only going to get worse as suppliers switch production from ICE vehicle parts to the more profitable EV parts.

Here's the weird thing, I have pretty recently produced parts of seemingly decent quality from Ford for my 1994 Explorer. Stuff like radius arms and an air intake duct that definitely does not apply to anything made in the last two decades. I'm glad this stuff was available and I could get it, but the widespread availability issues just don't make a lot of sense. Maybe that's my sign to continue hoarding old Explorer parts. 🤣

Manufacturers go where the money is in a sometimes desperate attempt to stay in business. The OEM's have been squeezing their suppliers for a very long time. Bad engineering will often cause them to burn through the service parts prematurely and the supplier wont or cant rerun the part due to economics. I had an ambulance out of service for 8 weeks in 2010 or 2011 due to an AC pipe that had an extremely high failure rate and Ford had no one to make more since the supplier was no longer in business. This has been going on for a long time.

It's eye opening over on the B6G forum, what a total POS the new Bronco is. I've never seen a new vehicle that's more unreliable and it's just not QC issues, it's systemic design flaws as well.

If you work on your own vehicles you likely have questioned the engineering choices companies make. Those in the trade are the victims of the incompetence and there seems to be plenty of blame to go around. I often question if there are drug testing programs at some of these companies.
