My Dad is finally ready to part with his '89 Chevy K1500. He's looking for a 2004 to new F150 or Silverado. Are there any glaring problems I can alert his too on these 2 choices? He's looking for a pretty basic 4WD, regular cab, V8 automatic. Looking around the internet there aren't many regular cab pickups for sale.

go to the viehicles section and click on my topic called ford or chevy.

By the way, Ford

If the prices are fairly competitive, I'd say go with the Ford.

Remember, you're giving away 40,000 miles in powertrain warranty.

Ford has historically been a better vehicle in most years. However; when you buy used it is a gamble, depending on vehicle maintenance & how used. With such good sales in this economy, I would go for a brand new Ford.

Yeah, they're around, just not as traded/sold/passed around like the fancy pants, dolled up family truckster trucks. I personally like the ride, power, fuel economy and drivetrain of the 4.8L or 5.3L Chevy V8s over a F150. You won't come close to 20mpg steady hywy with an F150 where we've done it regularly with newer 4.8L, 4x4 extra cab Chebbies.

Saw a brand new Chevy at a dealer in Summerville, GA the other day. Black, std cab, 4x4. If you are looking for a new one, there it is.

Not many of those around, seem to be a little more popular in rural areas; most people want ext cabs or crew cabs.

I checked that out, but it turned into a pi$$ing contest more than anything.

Go to a Ford dealer and find a truck that is close to what you want as possible. Take it out for an extended test drive. So soon as you are done, go straight to a Chevy dealer and do the same thing. I think you will go with the Chevy.

First let me say I was not brand loyal to either brand. I was getting out of a 96 Ford Ranger which was a great little truck for me. Last year I did drive them both back to back from the same used lot at several different dealers. I do not know the rates of failure but I do know every F150 that I drove ranging from an 03 to 05 had A/C problems. Every single one of them! The A/C did just not ever cool the vehicle or me off. I live in Florida and was doing the test drives last May. So the days were 90 plus degress. All of the Chevy's that I drove was ice cold. In Florida this is extremely important to me. Also I was comparing Chev's with the 5.3 to the Fords with the 5.4 and all the Chevy's felt a lot more powerful to me. One of my best friends also went along with me. He is a big time Ford guy and he agreed with me. I do not know the gear ratios of all the trucks I test drove so that could have played a big role and of coarse I was not towing anything. They were all crew cabs and 4x4's. The one thing I felt like the Ford had an advantage was the handling. The chassis did feel stiffer. But I still liked the ride of the Chevy better overall and I think a lot of that is due to the seats. I love the Chevy seats. Both felt like good trucks and neither felt like they were bad at anything except the A/C thing which could have been a huge coincidence but after test driving at least 4 with really bad A/C I did not think it was.

I am not brand loyal either. In 07 I needed a new truck and I used the procedure described to pick a truck, only in my case I used a whole day and tested drove a Ford, Dodge, Chevy, and Toyota. The Ford rode like a brick. I had a Dodge and was tired of all the front end problems I had with it. The Toyota was just too new of a model to take a chance on. I went with the Chevy, and could not be happier with it. Good luck

And you think this is going to end any other way?

They are the best selling truck because Chevy and GMC are figured separate. If they were combined, GM would sell more trucks than Ford.

This is a easy one...Get the one that is NOT from Government Motors/Obama Motors.

The F-150 is the most popular truck down here in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area for the private and law enforcement crowd.

As far as the A/C goes for the F-150 I have been in many and each one felt like I was in a refrigerater.
