Just bought a 2018 Taurus SEL with the 3.5 Duratec in it and generally assumed Ford recommended only 5w20. However, after reading the manuals recommended oil of 5w20, they list its 5w30 counterpart in synthetic blend and full synthetic. Only exception is for cold climates they only list 0w20. When did Ford start this?

Me..
I'd run a 5w30 in it. The 3.5 should be a NA motor
that is port injected that is easy in oil. No GDI or turbo also makes it a lot easier on oil has well.

Castrol Magnatec 5w30 or Motorcraft 5w30 would be my oils to run in that car.

Looking here at the 2nd printing, starting at page 307 with chart on page 308, they ONLY show the 945A spec (5-w20)
http://www.fordservicecontent.com/F...er-Manual-version-2_om_EN-US_01_2018.pdf
They also show the 0w-20 for the "alternative" cold climate, as you mention. I looked at both version 1 and version 2.

See the 2nd printing; the 3.5L engine info at the bottom of page 307, but the charts are actually on page 308. Not sure where you got the 5w30 reference from, but I suspect you were inadvertently looking at the 2.0L EB engine capacities. The manuals are sort of hard to decipher where one engine data starts and the other stops. The 2.0LEB data precedes the 3.5L data. The 2.0L data is ending where the 3.5L starts, on page 307.

The 3.5L Duratec n/a engine has always been only 5w-20 AFAIK.

5W is good to about -30*f. My daughter has a 2010 Ford focus and I over the years have run 5W-20 and 5w30 and there is virtually no oil use in 10,000 mile + oil change intervals with the 20 or the 30 and my daughter can't tell any difference by the feel or the mpgs . She is so anal that anal would call her anal Ford usually makes good engines.

I'm pretty sure Ford at first spec'd 5W-20 for Ecoboosts but went to 5w30 due to fears about fuel dilution?

Anyway Castrol Magnatec 5w30 seems to be a favorite on this board for the 3.5 Ecoboost, consistently has given good used oil analysis.

Underneath the recommended and optional oil in the chart they list 5w20 then list xo-5w30-qsp and xo-5w30-qfs. To my knowledge, 5w20 is xo-5w20-qsp and xo-5w20-qfs.

I looked up the past few years of Taurus owners manuals. Looks like they started listing 5w30 product number with the 5w20 in 2016-2018. Before that it was just 5w20.

It is a mis-print in the written text. It states both 5w-20 and 5w30.
But the actual specification is WSS-M2C-945-A, which is a 5w-20 lube.
The n/a 3.5L has ALWAYS been 5w-20 and nothing else in North America.

Although I agree with your analysis on the specification, 0w30 would be my choice for two reasons:

- the EB engine uses 30 grade and the oiling systems are unchanged between the two

- Nebraska winters are very cold
