I'm am retiring the old bimmer as I can no longer pay to play ($70 oil changes, falling apart, etc...) and am looking at Ford Fiesta's. I have not test driven one yet, but, I like the mpg ratings and the fact that it is NOT a hybrid. Does anyone have experience with the fiesta? How do they hold up? Is it a needy car outside of PM?

Merc is dead. I DO like Grand Marquis (as rentals) though never owned one - a nicely refined car given its LOOOOONG product cycle; FORD had time to get it right, then unfortunately kill it.

Fiesta isn't a bad car as long as you stay away from the automatic
You would be better off with a Fit or Scion xD-but not new for 10 grand! This is why I'm glad I bought the wife's xB back in early '05 for $13,800-there is NOTHING that good available now for under $20 grand new.
After having a Fiesta as a rental I'd agree... make sure you test drive a Focus with it and I think most would pay the difference.

09 Subaru impreza. We get 30+ mpg AVE on our FORESTER 5MT which is just a jacked up impreza. Really. Car feels more "Gemanic"than a VW and may cause less shock after the Bimmer.

do you by any chance drive a tank? not even a lamborghini needs that expensive of oil change.
i personaly find Fiesta to be best car to buy if you find one a couple years old. Most people i know like it beside the fact that the ride quality is a bit poor like most cheap cars.

The new softened Fit feels like a typical cheap entry car - nothing special and too pricey for what its worth. Noisey engine, only fair MPG, bad brake modulation, terrible strut front suspension and steering feed back and insane wander. I'll sell you mine for $14K - its less than a year old sport MT

Voltmaster seriously call up Walmart or any quick lube and just ask how much it costs for them to change the oil on a 2003 300xi. You'll get $115 at the cheapest because you cannot use regular old oil...Has to have the bmw ll cert. Call Napa and ask for the Oil filter prices....Two choices $10 or $15, plus 7 qts of Mobil 1 0w40 oil. Not cheap

For $17k one can get into a base-level Focus or Cruze. A Cruze LS with a manual transmission will average about 28-30 mpg while still offering a quiet interior. The Cruze LS's 1.8 is port-injected, but does need a timing belt every 70k miles or so. The Focus is supposed to be a nice car with the manual transmission and not the junk DSG that's in most of them.
Maybe consider a slightly used Corolla. Timing chain, bullet-proof automatic transmission...not a looker, but it never fails to impress me at the pump as I always get much better than EPA. Better than 38mpgUS lifetime for me

I think Arco was referring to 65 cars, not 65 fords.
IMO cars aren't as simple as "get what you pay for" because they simply aren't that one dimensional. For a given price there are new cars, used cars, small cars, trucks, bland reliable cars, unreliable performance cars, unreliable luxury cars... etc. For the OP's budget (10,000) he's looking at anything from a new~ish Fiesta sized commuter car to a 14 year old 7-series. At the same price some cars will be better at fulfilling the user's needs which vary from person to person.
Personally, I think one would almost always do better with a two year old compact than a new sub-compact. Focus/Civic/Corolla/Mazda3/Cruze all cost about the same and all have strengths and weaknesses, but most are better than their Fiesta/Fit/Yaris/Mazda2/Sonic siblings in almost every way. You save some money on the smaller car, but lose that on resale. The mileage is a wash IMO.
