Thinking about a 2019+ Ford Edge or other SUV in the large compact/small midsize range

My father-in-law's 2012 (?) Ford Escape failed on a long trip a couple of weeks ago and he's looking for a new car.

He's 70+ with a large frame. Looking for something more comfortable than the Escape, but I think he would be best off without getting anything TOO big. Looks like a budget of around $15k and wanting something under 100,000 miles.

Priorities are front-seat space, reliability, low running costs within the budget. I read that the 2018 Edge had coolant intrusion issues, but that seems to have been solved by 2019. 2.0L turbo seems to be the engine in those later Edges. The 2020+ Escape is also in the running, because I believe that generation is significantly bigger than the previous. That would be the 1.5 3-cyl or a 2.0 turbo. Escape Hybrid is probably out of budget (I like hybrids, though).

I'm not ruling out Toyota/Mazda/Honda, but the prices on their newer compacts are pretty high, and the older models within budget end up being on the smaller side.

He's not really a Chevy or Dodge guy, and IMO the Equinox/Terrain and Blazer are less attractive than the Fords. Hyundai/Kia sounds interesting to me, but I think budget-wise we are in the "Kia Boys" theft era.

Also I'm intrigued by Nissan - don't know much about them except they are CVT and the early Rogues were pretty bad.

Not really thinking about anything Euro, am I missing out on some good values?

What do you think? Any experience with the later Edges? Any recommendations?

FWIW, I'm asking because I'm the family "car guy" and helping him to pick out and research. I really haven't paid attention to SUVs though, so I'm open to the suggestions of the group.

We have a 2018 Ford edge with 110k and it has been an awesome car. The wife's dad is a big dude and he talks about how comfortable it is.

Ours is the naturally aspirated 3.5 v6 with auto transmission. No turbo or CVT BS

It pains me to say this but go sit in the front of a Forester. Check out ease of ingress/egress, space, and visibility.

I can't believe I'm saying this.....ugh I feel so dirty I need an N95 (which will fit right in with the Subie crowd -- at least here)

Most CRVs are also deceptively spacious. I feel less bad recommending Honda. Slight redemption!

Lincoln MKX can be found at decent prices ! and good for larger framed person.
depending on year most came with the 3.7 we have two and have been more the happy with them .
Service p.t.u and monitor water pump. otherwise they will run forever.

I am a reluctant 2018 Ford Edge owner. Inherited it from my brother with ~6K miles. It became my wife's car and I have to say it has been very reliable and comfortable on the road. Mine is the 3.5 v6 w/awd.

Now with 60K miles things I've done;

changed coolant by siphoning the degas bottle many times. Replaced with Motocraft orange coolant
changed the transfer case (75W-140) and rear diff. Mobil 1 (75W-90)
oil changes @5-6K with 5w-20 Mobil 1

Mileage is about 25 highway on regular gas. Other than two minor Ford recalls the car has never been in the shop. As was mentioned the internal water pump can become an issue but usually not before significant mileage. Clean oil and coolant seems to mitigate that well. Overall I think this is a good vehicle if one needs a medium SUV. Would I have bought it?

No, I'm done with Fords. That the engineers put the PTU tucked up near the exhaust manifold with a .8L capacity and shoehorned the wp into the inner timing system tells me something is wrong at the Blue Oval.

I have heard the 3.5L has a troublesome water pump location and I think the fuel economy with the 2.0T would be quite a bit better. Maybe the 3.5 would be the more reliable engine, though.

This CH-R might qualify

Otherwise, there's the Outlander Sport
Any reasons why you are recommending those? Seem like they are both subcompacts.

He tried a 2020 CR-V yesterday and liked it a lot. As an Accord fan, I am discouraging the 1.5T (head gasket), but if he would settle for the LX with the 2.4, I think that would be a good pick.

I guess this is the Edge with Lincoln features and branding. Is the 3.7 a better engine than the 3.5?

He checked out a few cars yesterday, not with me though. Liked the Edge and a 2020 CR-V. Drove a couple of hybrids - Escape and Santa Fe - and liked them too. Only car he didn't care for was a Buick Envision, found it uncomfortable. I had thought the budget was about $15k but the cars they were looking at yesterday were mostly around $25k with the Escape Hybrid the cheapest at $20k.

I service a '21 CRV with 1.5T. I don't care for the way the turbo + CVT drives, but she's got about 130k freedom with no significant problems. I know that's not a lot but I don't know how many miles your dad is likely to tick off?
