I currently use MotorCraft 10w30 synblend with PureOne filter in my V-10 Ex. with 98000 miles. I use it to tow my 8000 lb travel trailer and I was thinking of trying a full synthetic 5w40 due to towing. Too heavy? A better suggestion? What do you guys think?

What the recomment oil weight from factory ? Mobil 1 ( factory recomment weight ) high miles with motorcraft filter, can get both cheap at walmart.

I would keep using the 10W30. While I don't think a 5W40 would hurt, your mod motor doesn't really need it. The MC syn blend is an excellent oil too.

Honestly, if you're concerned with wear and tear from towing, it's not just your engine that needs to be addressed, you should address the transmission fluid in your transmission and gear oil in your differential as well.

But to answer your question, I'd upgrade to a full synthetic such as QSUD if I had concerns of your nature.

How about the trans fluid/filter change? Go with Mercon V as replacement for Mercon? Manual says absolutely no mixing of these two.

Wonder why no mixing? Doesn't make sense to me.

I would do a full change w/ Mercon V and add Lubegard Red; 1oz/quart(personal preference).

The 6.8L is spec'd for 5w20... Use motor craft 5w20 and sleep well.... 10w30 is well not spec'd for the modulars....you will cause more wear using 10w30's. If ANYONE doubts that look at the UOAs posted on this site

When your vehicle came out, they were incompatible, but that has since changed. However if you go shopping for fluid, still look for Mercon compatibility on the bottle. That way, you know it works. I'd say give Maxlife a look. Also, make sure you drain the torque converter if you decide to change the fluid and filter. Not sure of what transmission you have, but I know Ford was putting drain plugs in the torque converters at some point in time and that makes maintenance very easy.

He has the 4r100. Use Mercon V. change the filter as well. I would use Mobil 1, Amsoil, RP for the trans fluid..

How exactly will 10w-30 cause more wear?

The manual and oil filler cap both state 5w30. It is a 2000 model year and perhaps the later versions moved to 5w20. I had an Expedition 5.4L which used 5w20. It did fine but I'm sure it's used to help the fuel economy. Just a guess.

I would not use less than the 5W-30 that's recommended and towing four tons, I'd defiantly go with the 5W-40...

Your current oil/filter combo is fine. The V10 will run on 5w20, 5w30, 10w30, and 5w40 without a problem.

The 4R100 transmission is the weak link in your towing rig, so don't skimp on the maintenance. At 98k you should also change the gear oil in the rear differential (if you haven't already).

You should certainly change all the fluids as others recommended in previous posts if you want that 2000 to live under heavy towing.

I would also change the thermostat from the 195F factory thermostat temperature to a 180F thermostat. This will lower the oil temperature about 10F, boost the oil pressure, and generally keep the engine and accessories from cooking any more than they have to.

This wont have any effect on performance or economy and will not trigger a P0125 code. Your engine will thank you.

Psssst... UOA's aren't meant to be used to compare "wear" between oils....

use 5w20!!
it runs cooler and flows faster and it works unless you know better than the people that built those engines... forget about gas mileage that is a plus wear is the important thing...I have an engine shop and i use 5w20 bulk conoco in all my modulars because i dont have time to fix my own engines...
