Im thinking of doing filter changes every other Oil change on my Moms 05 Mercury Grand Marquis it takes 6 quarts of oil with the filter ..Does anyone know exactly how much oil it takes without the filter? I should know this but i think im losing my mind lately.. I looked it up but could not find it anywhere on all data.

I use QSUD and will now be using a fram ultra XG-2

The back of the owners manual might specify the difference. I'd pour five quarts and check the level. Prob 5.5 should do it.

Agree with 5 quarts and check...compare the size/volume of the oil filter with a quart jar and you'll see it is smaller than a quart.

The '03 4.6 in my sig takes 6 qts. WITHOUT changing the filter, around 6 2/3 or so with the filter change. Do 6 & check, I bet you'll need almost another one to get it to the full mark.

I'm not being nasty when I say this but It's always about checking against the dipstick.

There seems always to be variances in the production of dipstick marks.

We've 3 Saab 2.3l engines in the family. All 3 OM say 4 quarts with filter (underscoring the importance of changing ON TIME being that they're turbos).

One IS 4 quarts, one IS 4.25 and one IS 4.5. You can't plan it down the the ml. You gotta measure.

ALSO, if my experience is representative I'd say it's an argument to keep your oil at or near the FULL mark.

If they don't care where they put the full mark, you gotta take that into account. Cheers

The 4.6 can hold 7 quarts easily. Lots of racers run 7 in the 4.6 with zero issues. The filter holds right at .5 so don't even worry about it. You can get away with dumping in 6.

my question is if your running synthetic oil how many miles in our OCI are you looking to go on a filter ??

Modular motors are kind picky when it comes to an anti drain back valve , my old CVPI did well on Motorcraft 820's

just random thoughts as a former modular motor owner

I think i will go to once a year changes i used to do them every 6 months my Mom does not drive too much but sometimes goes places 3 or 4 times a week. I don't trust the Motorcraft filters anymore and i heard the new ones will have louvers so im probably going to the Ultra XG-2..Im open to opinions..

I would check the dipstick till I was satisfied with the oil level. More reliable than soliciting internet advice.

I remember thinking I did something wrong the first time I changed the oil in the Mountaineer. 6 quarts in and not even to the full mark.

I'd use the dipstick and determine the exact amount that way. Add 5 quarts, start it and wait 30 minutes, then add 8 ounces, then a couple of ounces at a time until you nail it. Or add 5.5 quarts and call it a day, being a few ounces over or under isn't going to hurt a thing.
