I've tended to many 4.6s on Panthers(and a few other vehicles) and I've seen that take as little as 4.5 and some as much as 6. The last one I looked after-my mom's '06 TC-was closer to 6. That's with a filter change.

This is based on my usual method of adding 1 quart under the book capacity and then checking checking the stick periodically while I add more oil.

Too much oil doesn't seem to effect this motor. My Lincoln, 6 qts puts it right on the add 1.0 qt mark. I've been putting 7 qts in it since it was new. Lincoln had a 40,000 mile service agreement and Everytime I got it back it was a qt low. According to the dipstick. Once I started changing it myself, O realized it takes 7 qts to be right at kthe full mark. Been doing all along. Manual says it holds 6.

This 2005 grand marquis and the 2004 Grand Marquis both take 6 quarts with the filter and is on the full mark when done.. 7 quarts will overfill it a quart..

Im thinking 5-1/2 quarts without the filter give or take.. I am doing this because i am changing to the fram ultra from the Motorcraft filter due to quality issues. There is a lot of short trips but the car is in a warm garage in the winter but i want to give it a six month oil change and every other change the filter..Im not being cheap here i don't like the dry starts when replacing filters.

Also the threads on the motorcraft filters never looked as nice as the ultra the ultra has more.
