Thoughts on running 5w-30 in a 1.5 EcoBoost, I'm not a fan of 5w-20, seems too thin especially with the low clearance rings. What's everyone's thoughts?

Edit- What about 5w-40 too?

Typical thin vs thick debate. I am considered someone with the “thin” opinion. Meaning not that I prefer thin oils, but that you won’t go wrong with a 5w20 or 5w30. Will have no measurable difference in wear either way, so I just follow OEM spec.

The 3 cylinder 1.5 or 4 cylinder 1.5?

Or a 1.5L V6 Cosworth 😲

Using 10W30 as it's specifically a no VII and ester containing oil: keeping the ring pack clean.

I recently went on a 2 week vacation to Israel. I rented a Hyundai Elantra there. Out of curiosity, I looked at the owners manual in the glove box. The preferred oil was 20W-50, but also gave as choices 5W-40, and 5W-30. It was the 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine, which I believe is the same engine sold in the US.

If you google "HTHS wear graph", you can see higher HTHS oils have less wear. This less wear may not be significant, but it's nice to have it anyway. I only use 5W-30 for all my vehicles. Can't ever bring myself to put 20 weight oils in any vehicle I care about.

Hey, interesting question! I'm with you on the 5w-20 being too thin, especially with those low clearance rings. 5w-30 might be a good compromise. And yeah, 5w-40 could be an option too, but might be a bit too thick for the EcoBoost.
