Food that doesn't make your house smell.

Most really good food is going to have a strong smell. Rather than cutting out the good food, just mask the odor. There are tons of cheap products on the market that will do this effectively...scented candles, plug in air fresheners, sprays, etc.

Honestly, I don't find cooking smells to be any more offensive than overuse of cologne or deodorant.

One of my former roommates (not a minority) eats fast food almost exclusively, will not touch any vegetable or fruit, doesn't bathe daily, and has generally poor hygiene. The ONLY food he would cook himself was boiled eggs. He had the worst BO of any person I have ever met, and I honestly think his diet was the main culprit.

Tell me what is offensive to you about what was said? I'm curious why an honest statement (in his mind, if not actual fact) made by a person is racist to you. He's 'prejudiced' because he's noted that Indian folks can smell like curry?
It's as though many of the people that frequent this board are always looking to interject the 'racist' card when another members opinion differs from their own. Labeling anybody as racist or prejudiced is a nasty and destructive thing to do. Those words should not be treated lightly nor cast toward another so easily.

I rarely ate Korean food. It was usually fusion from all continents. My parents loved to cook with spices and veggies that smelled back: garlic, hot peppers, onions, etc etc etc. We cooked it everyday and we were used to the smell. However, the kids at school could smell me a mile away.

This is why I'm so paranoid now. I try to eat good, organic and healthy food without the bad smell. I remember my friend cooked fried onions and liver and I opened all of the windows during a blizzard storm for 30 minutes. ...then I banned him from eating without my permission.

Today I ate, baked turkey, salad w/Olive olive oil, a Japanese seaweed salad and some rice. No smell at all. I love it.

Darn straight. No smell = no taste. Season the dickens out of your food and revel in the flavor!

Yeah, but only the posts that start with 'Popinski'.

But here's the reason I think he/she/it is so worried about how anyone else smells - childhood trauma:

I am in no way a racist. I have no idea why you think of me like that.

Try sitting by one in the airplane or train.

Wow, that's one of the most overtly racist things I've read on BITOG. Sad.

I've sat 'by one' (assuming you mean on a native of the Indian subcontinent, based on the curry comment) on a 17 hour direct flight to New Delhi more than once & spent several weeks in their country as well as plenty of 'domestic' flights on Air India and a few overnight trains. The people smell fine, the food smells delicious, but your attitude definitely stinks.

I am highly offended that you label somebody with a different opinion as 'racist'. What is it with people like you? A guy expressed his opinion in an honest fashion....he did not attack anybody. Speaking of childhood trauma...were you a hall monitor in school?

His wording blatantly suggests his prejudice.

When you denote a characteristic of an ethnicity then it specifically targets that group. He could have easily left out the minorities and reference to curry and still have made a point. Not to mention his response about the plane trip.

It's like saying "I saw a woman beating her kids and doing drugs" vs "I saw a (insert race/ethnicity of choice)woman...etc". Some things can be said without alienating people.

asiancivicmaniac: As a minority myself, I know that most minorities cook the smelliest food. This is fact. Minorities cook things that smell better/worse because it is not typical in American cooking. HOWEVER, because of the way it smells, it is important to change things around so we don't burden anyone (I.e. me smelling bad at school).

This is why I cook things differently without sacrificing taste and proper nutrition. The smell of curry is extremely strong taste and the after-smell that are left on clothes and carpet is very disturbing. That is why some Indian families are aware of this and are starting to cook it outside.

The race card is for the perverted-minded. Thanks for ruining my thread for whoever pulled the race card out.

This isn't racist, that's just silly. You eat curry, you smell like people that eat curry. Who eats curry? Indians. Who else? Almost nobody (except a few hippies, but that doesn't count.) If you think that's racist, I'm sorry. It's not. Let me tell you a story though:

I honestly didn't even know that curry was a spice until I was probably 15 years old. I just thought that's how all Indians smelled. Like as if it was their version of B.O. or something. It permeated their clothes and their places of work just as B.O. would. I had never smelled that smell on any other people except Indians, so I figured it was a body chemistry thing. When I was finally introduced to a bottle of curry powder at my first job, sacking groceries at a grocery store, it absolutely blew my mind. It was pure ignorance on my part. Hilarious, in retrospect, but not racist.

It's not racist, it's just SMELL!

If you smell, you smell. Tough. Get over it!

I'm sure I smell like Garlic some days due to high consumption.

I can't understand wanting food with no smell!

You were characterizing one ethnic group of people as smelling bad and challenged the membership at large to bear the burden of sitting next 'to one' on a plane. That's the definition of racism. As in any internet forum, you're judged by the content of your posts.

You may have meant, 'Wow dang, curry sure smells awful and it really sticks in your pores.' but that isn't what you said.

And I expressed my opinion that his posts sounded racist. So now you're offended at me because of it? Maybe somebody else will be highly offended that you got offended.

Do you have a vent hood that exits outside? It makes a big difference in the amount of odours in the house. We had an apartment for a while with a vent hood that didn't exit outside and it didn't do anything useful that I could tell. Once in while my wife will make something with hot peppers that literally makes me tear up without good ventilation. It tastes good if a little hot for me.
Anyways, I'm not an expert on Indian food but I think the folks that do have a noticable aroma are eating a ton of curry constantly. We have curry fairly often but with much less intensity of spice and we don't get the same aroma.

No....you attacked an individual as saying what you believed to be a 'racist' thing....and then said it was 'sad'. You had no valid reason to bring up the race thing. The OP was just making a comment based on his own 'nose' recollection. Then you go after him for saying the word 'one' (as in ONE of them). So suddenly that's a racist comment....or in your words (I guess an expert on racism), tit was the 'definition of racism'? No my friend, it's comments like yours that smear folks with good intentions in the name of being multi-cultural and diverse.
Funny thing is....the OP described HIMSELF as a minority. Guess he must hate himself then, huh?

Growing up in a korean household- my parents were obsessive about the kimchee breath. My mother and father always had multiple packs of gum or breathmints on them when they went out. It was hilarious before leaving the house, they passed it out to all of us and then we got another stick right before we got out of the house. They bought so much breath mints they eventually started buying it in bulk.

My dad was also big on the cologne - old spice

Negative, ghostrider.

I said his/her/its post sounded rascist. At no point did I say that anyone was as such, nor did I 'attack'. And I stand by it - it appears I'm not the only one who feels that way.

LOL, but what about the burps!?!?! The burps are the worst. Cabbage and radishes make one burp and [censored] a lot!!!

Ha so true on the burps. I do not remember what they did about the burps- they may have held it in and well you know eventually it comes out the other end.

No problem....but using such a vile word to attack an individuals OPINION does indeed tend to label the person saying it....does it not? Throwing around words like 'racist' and such isn't apt to having a fair discussion....especially when using such a word is not accurate in the slightest. I could say that you're posts in this thread make you SOUND like an idiot or a fool....but for the sake of civility I will not. I would not be surprised if the often misused 'Nazi' reference comes up next.
You would have been more civil...and far more accurate...to have used a term such as 'stereotype' (although I saw none) instead of a highly inflammatory word as 'racism'. That simply was not warranted nor was if fair to do that to the OP.
