Am I the only one who has noticed that there are no vegetable gardens any more? I can remember dozens of them in the 60's and 70's.Any poor household had a garden if there was any room at all or one.
I suppose welfare 'enables' people to not have to worry about actually providing for yourself.

When you got kids on food stamps who grow up eating junk food, they will not eat vegetables, even if it is butter-soaked sweet corn.

Must be no asian families close or my wife's family that is. They'll steal the tree if your not watching.. oh the stories I could tell. As far as garden's in city I had an awful hard time trying to get anything but tomato's to grow. Not sure if fertilizer would help or not just easier to buy at the store.

You'll be less upset if you look at the lottery and cigarette taxes as a food-stamp-abuser-revenue-recovery-tool.

EBT cards are different than the WIC program. WIC is very specific about what you can use the checks for (items and quantity is printed on the check), the kids have regular scheduled visits that need to be made or you don't get the checks. proper nutrition and breastfeeding is stressed at the office.
I guess the intent is to make kids healthier and cut down on high healthcare costs in the future.
I would say many people getting an EBT card also may have a job; the working poor, or 'underemployed'. I qualified for a short time when I had gotten laid off. I also worked part time. but when I got a full time job again, I lost the EBT card.
there are all kinds of assistance programs, and you can game the system if you know how. that will always be the case. but what there needs to be is a procedure in place to ween these people off the system.

I remember a helpful clerk at a supermarket pointing out to someone new to WIC that they also qualified for a jar of peanut butter. (For breastfeeding support/nutrition?) The dad was outraged, replying "WTH are you talking about, we already have a dozen jars of PB in the cabinet?"

I'm glad they know how to say when.

Don't you guys know that Junk food in this country is cheaper? If someone on food stamps only had $150 to feed four people. They will load up on the cheap [censored] like ramen noodles, chef boyardee, and 85 cent tv dinners. All fatening foods.

Without knowing her financial condition you can't make judgments like this simply because she has a better car than you. Maybe she has foster kids that she takes care of and the state help her with food stamps.
I'm not passing judgement.I have enough sense to know what is goig on.If she has foster children who need food then she shouldn't go to a 7-11 and buy Cheetos and Snickers and pork rines and all that other garbage. She should use the benefit wisely and buy from a grocery store where she can get her moneys worth.Common sense is gone for good.

The fact that people are trading food stamps for what they really like shows that they still have some initiative left and don't really need the dole.

I was hoping they would make gasoline with it.

as for those foods allowed under regulations there are changes that need to be applied . Soda , junk food ( chips , etc. ) , candy and many other items need to be removed .

The Salvation Army here in town hand out chits and gift cards to those in need.

One of the local butchers was allowing payment for meat via these chits, and received a narcy phonecall from the salvos, as some of his customers were complaining about him "rationing their meat".

He'd observed that there were quite a few families would come in to "buy" meat, would buy 10 pounds of sausages, and a small amount of rump/fillet steak, lamb loin chops etc. Asked one of them if the sausages were for the kids, and the steak for the grownups, to which they replied "it's my one pleasure"

So he made a store policy that the chits were only redeemable for a $30, or $50 meat package, with whole chook, decent mince, blade steak, chuck, all the sorts of things that hearty and healthy meals could be made out of, plus has recipes etc.

Salvos told him that he had no right to tell their "customers" how to spend their money.

Dunno if he still takes the chits, but a lot of people on a tight budget visit him just for his value packs.

I propose organic steak, organic veggies, organic cheese, and organic whole grain bread for the financially disadvantaged -- and of course puffy pirate shirts and nothing but muffin stumps for the homeless (buccaneers).

heck , who the h*ll can afford anything that's organic ? That grocery bill alone could make you go bankrupt .

Suppose 10% of people in the USA are on welfare. If you divide the trillion dollars that were stolen from the treasury and fed to the wealthy friends of the system into that number, about 35 million, you get about $28,000 per person, which is enough to buy the best organic foods out there, and have a few vacations a year.
